BWW Review: GROOVE at The Harlequin Theater
by Ashley Corbaley - Sep 21, 2018

For several years the Harlequin Theater has entertained audiences in the San Antonio area. Located on the Fort Sam Houston Military Base, the Harlequin Theater is an intimate venue that is as charming as it is historic. Currently playing at this gem of a theater is GROOVE, a musical revue taking you back to the days of bright colors and big Hair. From the moment you enter the theater, the dim lights and misty fog immerses you completely in the experience and makes you wish you didn't leave your bell-bottoms at home. GROOVE features hit songs from the late-1960's featuring legendary artists such as The Rolling Stones, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, and The Beatles. It is hard not to sing along as the cast belts out song after song with seasoned precision. Under Laura Anglin's expert choreography, each song was enhanced with electrifying dance moves, making each number even more fun to watch. From the very first note, the cast exuded a contagious energy that remained until the final bow. It is no secret that the cast and crew put their heart and soul into this show, resulting in an evening of non-stop entertainment sure to bring a smile to your face. (more...)

BWW Review: Artistry's Beautifully Tragic AWAKE AND SING! will Break Your Heart in the Best Way
by Jill Schafer - Sep 21, 2018

I love sad plays. I love stories of miserable families who love each other but don't know how to express it in healthy ways. AWAKE AND SING!, now playing at Artistry's black box theater, is one such tragically beautiful and beautifully tragic play, like Tennessee Williams set in the Bronx. Or rather, since Clifford Odets' 1935 play predates Williams' major works, I guess I should say that Tennessee Williams is like Odets set in the South. The multi-generational Berger family has become beaten down by life, with the younger generation trying to break free and make a new life in this new country, if only it will let them. With a strong cast and detailed design in an intimate space, Artistry's production is beautiful and heart-breaking. (more...)

EZI Releases New Single NEED YOU LIKE THAT Released Today, Touring with Max This Fall!
by BWW News Desk - Sep 21, 2018

EZI is excited to release her beguiling new single, 'Need You Like That' via 5 Town Records. It is the first taste of an upcoming EP, largely inspired by her experience growing up as a young women in America who's family immigrated from USSR. While writing, EZI was drawn to her father's story, a classical violinist who arrived in the US in 1981 with just $200 and his violin. Of the track she notes, 'This song is about temptation, but keeping the lyrics ambiguous was very much an intentional choice. I made it on a whim at 1am in a basement room in New York and really stepped away from myself when making it. I eventually asked my dad to come join me in the studio and play violin on the track, which made the whole experience very special.'   (more...)
