Border People

Part of the company's 35th anniversary season, Border People is a solo show, written and performed by the award-winning artist Dan Hoyle, based on his conversations with immigrants, refugees, asylum seekers, and border crossers of all kinds at both the North and Southern borders of the United States. It offers a startling gallery of portraits of those, in Hoyle's words, "who cross borders, geographical or cultural, by necessity or choice."

The Marsh San Francisco presents the World Premiere of Border People, the newest solo show by award-winning actor and playwright Dan Hoyle, based on his conversations with immigrants, refugees, asylum seekers, and border crossers of all kinds. Hoyle began work on the show after the election of Trump in November 2016; as the American immigration debate has grown more heated, Hoyle has worked with increased urgency to complete the work and bring it to the stage. Border People, directed and co-developed by Charlie Varon, will be presented January 11 - February 23, 2019 (press opening: January 25) with performances at 8:00pm Thursdays, 8:00pm Fridays, and 5:00pm Saturdays at The Marsh San Francisco, 1062 Valencia St., San Francisco. The stunning production of Luis Alfaro's "Oedipus El Rey" currently running at the Magic Theatre is visually arresting, genuinely moving, and slyly humorous - oh, and also seriously sexy, all in a taut 95-minute running time. The Magic presented the world premiere of this play back in 2010 and is bringing it back in this new production as a legacy revival. Given the current, unsettling political discourse on immigrants, this revival could not feel more timely.

The NYC Department of Cultural Affairs (DCLA) has announced this year's recipients of grants through the CreateNYC Language Access Fund. 36 NYC-based nonprofits will receive grants ranging from $5,000 to $25,000 in support of programming that increases access to arts and culture for those whose primary language is not English. Grounded will begin its Rolling World Premiere at the San Francisco Playhouse (San Francisco, CA, August - September, 2013), followed by performances at Borderlands Theater (Tucson, AZ, September - October, 2013) and Unicorn Theatre (January - February, 2014). Grounded won the 2012 Smith Prize for a new play on American political themes.
