A Broadway Musical is a musical with a book by William F. Brown, lyrics by Lee Adams, and music by Charles Strouse. The Broadway production closed after 14 previews and only one performance on December 21, 1978.

The plot about a sleazy white theatre producer's attempt to adapt an African-American writer's serious play for a commercial stage musical was inspired by Adams and Strouse's real-life experiences with their 1964 Broadway production of Golden Boy. The star of the musical-within-the-musical (Sneakers, about a basketball star) closely resembles Golden Boy star Sammy Davis, Jr. When the star opts to leave the show, the playwright - who from the start had resisted turning his work into a musical - steps in and takes on the lead role in order to save the production.

Photo Coverage: Laura Osnes Returns to Cafe Carlyle with Ted Sperling and Special Guest Ryan Silverman
by Stephen Sorokoff - Sep 27, 2017

Even If you have premium seating at A Broadway Musical or nightclub you still will not be able to feel that the beautiful girl with the spectacular voice performing on stage is singing just for you, and in your living room! Laura Osnes at Cafe Carlyle last night was acting and singing a few feet away from all of us in The Carlyle's legendary living room with her show called Cockeyed Optimists and as they say, you had to see it to believe it . Together with Ted Sperling and Laura's special guest Ryan Silverman they created The World of Rodgers and Hammerstein and it probably would be nominated for a Tony Award if it were in a theatre. The lucky audience that got to be up close and personal with Broadway royalty in Cafe Carlyle were at times overwhelmed with the beauty of the music being made by these three artists, who possess many theatre awards between them. So if you can join them, like all good hosts they are going to make sure there's plenty of good food, wine and conversation during your visit. You will even get to give them a hug and say goodnight to Laura, Ted, and Ryan after the show. (more...)

BWW Review: SUGAR at Alex Theatre
by Cary Ginell - Sep 25, 2017

The temptation to take a film classic and turn it into A Broadway Musical is a road fraught with peril. How do you take something perfect and make it better? This was the question posed in 1972 when producer David Merrick decided to musicalize the uproarious 1959 farce Some Like It Hot. The result was Sugar, which enjoyed a respectable 14-month run on Broadway (505 performances) and received four Tony nominations, including one for lead actor Robert Morse, who played Jerry/Daphne. The 86-year-old Morse was on hand at the Alex Theatre in Glendale Sunday night as Musical Theatre Guild presented a rousing staged reading of the musical. Morse and the audience clearly enjoyed the show (he could be seen doing a virtual karaoke act of the score from his seat), but most of what works for the show is what worked for the film, with little new of substance added to the musical. BWW Interview: Kyle Riabko of CLOSE TO YOU: BACHARACH REIMAGINED at Cabaret 313 is Something Different for Detroit!
by Katie Laban - Oct 27, 2017

Cabaret 313 is presenting multi-talented artist Kyle Riabko for two one-night only performances of his Burt Bacharach themed show, Close to You: Bacharach Reimagined on Saturday, October 28th at the Black Box Theatre at the Detroit Opera House in Detroit. The main thing is I pack thirty-five songs into about an hour and twenty minutes, and you start to realize just how many hits Burt has written that you know such as 'Close to You,' 'Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head,' 'Say a Little Prayer,' and 'And Something There to Remind Me.' The list just goes on and on and on, said Kyle Riabko. It's really a journey through the music and career of Burt Bacharach, but it will also appeal to the people who grew up, like I did, not listening to him, but to Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page and that kind of stuff because I play it from a guitar player's point of view.
