A Broadway Musical is a musical with a book by William F. Brown, lyrics by Lee Adams, and music by Charles Strouse. The Broadway production closed after 14 previews and only one performance on December 21, 1978.

The plot about a sleazy white theatre producer's attempt to adapt an African-American writer's serious play for a commercial stage musical was inspired by Adams and Strouse's real-life experiences with their 1964 Broadway production of Golden Boy. The star of the musical-within-the-musical (Sneakers, about a basketball star) closely resembles Golden Boy star Sammy Davis, Jr. When the star opts to leave the show, the playwright - who from the start had resisted turning his work into a musical - steps in and takes on the lead role in order to save the production.

BWW Review: NEWSIES Is Exceptionally Entertaining, Bursting With Raw Energy!
by Robert Encila - Jul 18, 2017

Disney's Newsies is a Tony Award-winning musical derived from the motion picture of the same title. Produced for the first time in Manila, it has commanded the day's headlines and kept a viewing public abuzz with excitement. We can assume Disney's ubiquitous brand had preceded its product, given the film's relative failure to draw critical and commercial acclaim in the early '90s. Considering its cult following after the release of the home video, it makes sense to bring musical theater back to its logical milieu where live performance of A Broadway Musical is unparalleled. This production has been every bit as advertised: it's electric, witty, and poignant. (more...)

BWW Review: Theatre by the Sea's Oddly Timely THE PRODUCERS
by Andria Tieman - Aug 23, 2017

THE PRODUCERS has the odd pedigree of being a movie (1967) that became A Broadway Musical (2001) and then returned to the silver screen as a movie version of the 2001 musical (2005).  With this many iterations on offer, it's clear that this is a show with staying power that it beloved by many.  The mind of Mel Brooks is a twisted space to spend some time in, but even the subtle cringiness that comes with good satire doesn't last long, as the laughs keep coming. It can be difficult to find humor in mocking nazis so close on the heels of the white supremacy rally in Charlottesville, VA, but it's still very satisfying to, probably even more than when the musical premiered. Even so, there is a bit of queasiness that comes from looking at so many swastikas, and it's hard to shake. (more...)

BWW Review: Levi Kreis Brings BROADWAY AT THE KEYS to LA
by Don Grigware - Aug 21, 2017

A small town Tennessee Southern Baptist sissy Levi Kreis has taken LA, New York and the world by storm within this millenium. When he performs not only gays flock to see him. He has many, many straight fans as well. Why? Because this phenomenon is one enormous talent who, as my mom used to say, can make a piano TALK. He won a Tony for playing Jerry Lee Lewis in Million Dollar Quartet and has developed a fast-paced, heart-pounding style like no other singer of this generation. He is mesmerizing to watch and a dynamite pleasure to listen to.  On Saturday August 19 Kreis (pronounced like Christ without the t by his own admission) performed his solo show at LGBT in Hollywood . He is on tour to promote his latest CD Broadway at the Keys. To say the show was a hit with the audience is an understatement, as most lined up in the lobby following the 80-minute set to purchase the CD and to meet the charismatic singing/songwriting star for a selfie and a signature.
