PRIVATE PEACEFUL to Play Theatre Royal Glasgow, 25-28 June

By:

To mark the centenary of World War 1, the celebrated stage production of Michael Morpurgo's hugely popular children's story, PRIVATE PEACEFUL, takes to the stage, presented by Scamp Theatre, at the Theatre Royal Glasgow from Wednesday 25 until Saturday 28 June 2014.

In this one-man show, the role of Private Tommo Peaceful will be played by Paul Chequer. Paul starred in the original production of PRIVATE PEACEFUL at the Bristol Old Vic, then at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, a run at the Soho Theatre and, most recently, at the Theatre Royal Haymarket in 2012. At this last run, presented by the Royal National Theatre, he shared the role with Mark Quartley and they were jointly nominated for Best Solo Performance at the Whatsonstage.com Awards.

Paul Chequer appeared in the 2012 film of PRIVATE PEACEFUL in the role of the Corporal. He is perhaps best known on TV for the role of Jamie Collier in the Channel 4 drama As If (2001 - 2004). He also appeared as Nathan in the BBC Three drama Sinchronicity and as Eugene Jones in an episode of the science fiction series Torchwood. His numerous theatre appearances include Michael Morpurgo's War Horse at the National Theatre.

PRIVATE PEACEFUL relives the life of Private Tommo Peaceful, a young First World War soldier awaiting the firing squad at dawn. During the night he looks back at his short but joyful past growing up in rural Devon: his exciting first days at school; the accident in the forest that killed his father; his adventures with Molly, the love of his life; and the battles and injustices of war that brought him to the front line.

Winner of the Blue Peter Book of the Year, the hugely popular novel PRIVATE PEACEFUL is by the former Children's Laureate, Michael Morpurgo (also author of War Horse). His inspiration came from a visit to Ypres where he was shocked to discover how many young soldiers were court-martialled and shot for cowardice during the First World War. A film version of the book was released in 2012.

The adaptor Simon Reade also directs. Associate director is Mark Leipacher, designer is Bill Talbot, original lighting designer is Tim Streader with lighting for this touring production by Wayne Dowdeswell and sound designer is Jason Barnes.

Most suitable for ages 8+
