The Santa Barbara Symphony has been keeping a close eye on developments related to COVID-19 (coronavirus) and is taking proactive steps to prioritize the health and safety of our musicians, visiting artists, employees, patrons, and our community at large. In consideration of, and in cooperation with, the Granada Theatre, our board, staff, and musicians, we have rescheduled An American in Paris from March 21 and 22, 2020, to June 13 and 14, 2020.

a??a??a??a??a??a??a??The Santa Barbara Symphony presents a musical love letter to the City of Lights featuring a screening of Academy Award-winning film An American in Paris with live accompaniment from the Santa Barbara Symphony under the baton of guest conductor Constantine Kitsopoulos, on March 21 and 22 at the Granada Theatre. This engaging and light-hearted Hollywood classic stars Gene Kelly and Leslie Caron as they dance their way through post-war Paris to the tunes of George Gershwin.

The Department of Theater and Dance presents Molière's Tartuffe, a famous piece of literature from France and one of Molière's masterpieces, adapted by David Ball and directed by Julie Fishell. The show opens on February 27th and runs through March 7th in the UCSB Hatlen Theater. It is one of the greatest farces ever written, Tartuffe is a hilarious, satiric romp, exposing hypocrisy and greed. A timeless comedy that is perfect in a major election year!
NPR's FROM THE TOP To Record Live Program Featuring LA Children's Chorus And More At The Wallis

From the Top, the nationally-distributed NPR program heard throughout the Los Angeles region on KUSC (FM 91.5), brings its next live recording event to the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts on Wednesday, March 4, 2020 at 7:30 PM, featuring newly announced host Peter Dugan and co-host Vijay Gupta. Dugan and Gupta will interview and perform with each of the exceptional young artists, ages 10 - 18, showcasing not just their inspiring talent, but also giving insight into the lives of these young, aspirational artists. The event, presented in conjunction with GRoW @ The Wallis, the umbrella for a robust mix of education and outreach programs at The Wallis, is open to the public and tickets are now available.

PETER & THE WOLF Will Be Presented to Benefit The Granada

The Granada Theatre, in partnership with Community Arts Music Association (CAMA) of Santa Barbara, Opera Santa Barbara, State Street Ballet, and the Santa Barbara Symphony, will present a special benefit performance of Peter and the Wolf, Sergei Prokofiev's enchanting musical tale of adventure and bravery, at 2 pm on Sunday, February 23. The performance will feature the Santa Barbara Youth Symphony, under the baton of Maestro Nir Kabaretti, with narration by renowned theatre scholar Simon Williams, who will also direct. Brief programs featuring Santa Barbara Youth Opera singers and Gustafson Dance Students from State Street Ballet will open the event. Tickets cost $10 for adults and $100 for VIP access, with proceeds benefiting the Granada Theatre. Children ages 17 and under will be admitted free of charge with a ticket.

Under the baton of guest conductor Christian Reif, this event will include a performance of Pulitzer Prize-nominated composer Michael Gilbertson's Graffiti: Concerto for Chamber Orchestra by the Symphony, as well as Mozart's Symphony No. 39, and the Overture to La Clemenza di Tito. Also on the program, rising-star cellist Thomas Mesa performs Tchaikovsky's Variations on a Rococo Theme. These concerts have been made possible by the generosity of Selection Sponsors Dan and Meg Burnham and Corporate Sponsor Mission Audio/Video.

The Santa Barbara Symphony kicks off the second half of its 2019-2020 season with Beethoven's a?oeEroicaa?? on January 18th and 19th at the Granada Theatre. The evening begins with Michael Torke's Ash, followed by world-renowned Israeli pianists Sivan Silver and Gil Garburg performing a unique arrangement for piano four-hands and strings based on Johannes Brahms' G minor Piano Quartet, Op. 25. The program will close with Beethoven's revolutionary a?oeEroicaa?? Symphony, conducted by Music & Artistic Director, Nir Kabaretti. The program has been made possible by the generosity of selection sponsors JoAnne Ando, Hans Koellner and Karin Jacobson, and Dr. Robert W. Weinman.
Community Arts Music Association Announces Pre-Concert Lecture Series

Community Arts Music Association (CAMA) of Santa Barbara will present a free, public lecture immediately prior to each of its six International Series concerts through the remainder of the 2019-20 season beginning January 27. A project of the CAMA Women's Board, the lectures will take place at the Santa Barbara Central Library's Faulkner Gallery and (in one case) the New Vic Theater. Lectures start at 6:45 pm unless otherwise noted. International Series concerts are presented at the Granada Theatre.

Director Brian McDonald does a nice job of keeping the actors rotating around the multiple microphones on stage (or having them add and remove costuming items) to distinguish between multiple characters. The staging is dynamic and the sight gags are clever, and the actors give pleasant and efficient performances, bringing out the warmth and hopefulness of this holiday tale. Ensemble's production highlights humor and heart for an agreeable, well-produced night of festive entertainment.
