A community's point of view is expressed through the local art scene, and Santa Barbara's On The Verge Festival promotes underrepresented points of view by producing theatre by female playwrights, LGBTQIA playwrights, and playwrights of color. Single tickets are on sale for Opera Santa Barbara's 2017-18 season, which will open with a sumptuous production of Jules Massenet's sultry Manon starring celebrated soprano Sarah Coburn on November 3 and 5, followed by a frolicsome staging of Gioachino Rossini's enduring comic masterwork The Barber of Seville on March 2 and 4. Ranging in price from $29 to $204, tickets can be purchased at www.granadasb.org or by calling 805-899-2222. Performances will take place at the Granada Theatre, 1214 State Street in downtown Santa Barbara. (more...)

Critically acclaimed chamber music ensemble Camerata Pacifica will open its 28th season with a program that combines Pulitzer Prize-winning composer John Harbison's String Trio with a pair of mid-20th century Russian gems - Sergei Prokofiev's striking Sonata for Flute and Piano in D Major and Dmitri Shostakovich's elegiac Piano Trio No. 2 in E Minor. Performances will take place at 3 pm on September 10 (Ventura), 7:30 pm on September 12 (San Marino), 8 pm on September 14 (Los Angeles), and 7:30 pm on September 15 (Santa Barbara). (more...)

The Board of Directors for the Santa Barbara Chamber Orchestra has elected to shutter the venerable ensemble permanently. The decision follows a Board vote in April to suspend operations for the 2017-18 season, pending a review of the organization's prospects. The Chamber Orchestra presented its final concert of the 2016-17 season on May 16 at the Lobero Theatre. (more...)

While concepts in High Society may have been viewed as 'kitschy' when the play premiered two decades ago, in the age of Instagram stars and The Real Housewives, these characters, who are charming in their relative innocence as compared to the shameless celebrities of the information age (even our president is a faux-lebrity real estate mogul-turned-reality show host), seem tame. High Society is a pleasant enough way to spend an evening, but it doesn't really go anywhere. There are no risks, no extraordinary thrills: just a very safe presentation of feel-good music from a bygone era. (more...)
