San Francisco International Piano Festival Announces Third Season

The alchemy-themed gala continues the Exploratorium's year-long celebration of its Golden Anniversary, and will honor 50 years of creating joyful, inquiry-based experiences that empower people to understand the world around them. Proceeds will benefit the Exploratorium's educational, environmental, and arts programming, and continued efforts to transform science and STEM education around the world.

After bringing the successful production of An Iliad to theatres around the country including Berkeley Rep, Tony Award-winner Denis O'Hare and Obie Award-winner and Associate Director Lisa Peterson are teaming up once again to unearth the all-too-human formation of the most influential book in Western history - the Bible. In addition to collaborating with O'Hare on the script, Petersen will also direct The Good Book.
Little Opera Presents Annual Concert Of Original Operatic Works

On May 4-6, Little Opera will hold their annual year-end concert featuring the original operatic works of elementary and middle school students. Students have been working with Little Opera teaching artists since September to write, compose, and rehearse their own 'little' operas, which will be showcased at the Children's Creativity Theater. The program is completing its 8th season as a unique after-school offering in San Francisco.

From April 13 through July 14, 2019, Napa Valley Museum Yountville will present Picasso & The Masters of 20th Century Printmaking, in the Main Gallery. This exhibition is a deep dive into the fine art of printmaking as exemplified by Pablo Picasso and the modern masters of the 20th century. The show walks the viewer through the primary printmaking techniques from lithography, mezzotint, engraving and woodcuts to linocuts, pochoirs, and carborundum etching with interactive demonstrations. The show features 50 plus rare and iconic prints by Picasso, Chagall, Miro, Dali, Matisse, Braque, Matta, and Motherwell.  Also includes a fascinating display of printmaking tools and presses from the International Printing Museum and the California College of the Arts.

The San Francisco Early Music Society (SFEMS) brings its 2018-19 concert season to a close next month with a special concert by acclaimed countertenor Iestyn Davies joined by the brilliant young lutenist Thomas Dunford, dubbed the Eric Clapton of the lute (BBC Music Magazine). Together they will perform songs by Dowland, Purcell and Handel. This concert will take place at 4 p.m., Sunday, May 19, at First Congregational Church in Berkeley. San Francisco Ballet Announces 2020 Repertory Season

Artistic Director Helgi Tomasson and San Francisco Ballet today announced programming for the 2020 Repertory Season. Building on a heritage of commissioning groundbreaking dance from today's top choreographers, uncovering new choreographic talent, staging modern classics, and preserving the works that make up the canon of classic ballet, the 2020 Season places SF Ballet at the forefront of innovation and preeminence. Highlights include two new SF Ballet commissions by Cathy Marston and Trey McIntyre, and a co-commission with American Ballet Theatre of a work by Alexei Ratmansky; as well as works by George Balanchine, David Dawson, Harald Lander, Edwaard Liang, Benjamin Millepied, Mark Morris, Liam Scarlett, Helgi Tomasson, and Stanton Welch. The Season's three story ballets include Balanchine's A Midsummer Night's Dream, Wheeldon's Cinderella, and Tomasson's Romeo & Juliet.

Patricia Milton's THE VICTORIAN LADIES' DETECTIVE COLLECTIVE Comes to Berkeley City Club

Central Works season of new plays continues this spring with a "cheeky" thriller written by the local award-winning playwright Patricia Milton, The Victorian Ladies' Detective Collective, opening May 4 running through June 2 (previews 5/2 & 3); world-premiere # 63, from the Central Works Writers Workshop. The production, directed by Gary Graves, is the fifth writer/director comic collaboration between Central Works' resident playwright and its company co-director. In Victorian London it seems Jack the Ripper may be at it again where sisters Loveday and Valeria run a boarding house for Single Ladies. When a series of gruesome murders terrorizes the neighborhood, they appeal to the police for protection. But Scotland Yard is no help at all. The bodies are piling up on their doorstep! So the women join with an American ex-pat to bring the killer to justice on their own. Last season's CW production of Bamboozled by Patricia Milton won both TBA awards in the Outstanding Performer slots for Stacy Ross & Chelsea Bearce (now in this production), along with Entire Ensemble and Outstanding Production.

Ratmansky's Shostakovich Trilogy Closes SF Ballet's 2019 Repertory Season

Alexei Ratmansky's Shostakovich Trilogy returns to San Francisco Ballet (SF Ballet) May 7-12, closing the Company's 2019 Repertory Season at the War Memorial Opera House. Called a "fascinating, thrilling, bewilderingly ambiguous evocation of life in Shostakovich's Russia" (The New York Times), and simply, "a masterpiece" (San Francisco Chronicle), Shostakovich Trilogy is Ratmansky's homage to the composer, using three of his full-length works: the Symphony No. 9, Chamber Symphony, and Piano Concerto No. 1.
