James Baik Wins 34th Annual Irving M. Klein International String Competition

The first prize of the 34th Annual Irving M. Klein International String Competition, carrying a purse of $13,000, has been awarded to CELLIST JAMES BAIK, 17. The Competition Finals were held Sunday, June 2nd at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and featured four competitors advancing from an original group of nine Semifinal programs the previous day,. Baik's winning program for the final round included movements from Beethoven's Cello Sonata No. 5, op. 102, no. 2; from the Cello Concerto in A minor, op. 129 by Schumann; and from the Bach Cello Suite No. 5 in C minor; as well as the commissioned work Between Worlds by Carlos Simon.

African-American Shakespeare Company Debuts An Updated MACBETH At The Taube Atrium This July

The African-American Shakespeare Company will bring a bold, updated, modern-verse version of Macbeth to the Taube Atrium Theater in San Francisco for a series of six performances only. The adaptation-which will feature a more potent and alluring trio of witches than usually seen-is by playwright Migdalia Cruz, and was originally written for the Oregon Shakespeare Festival's Play On series. This is its West Coast debut.

San Francisco Opera Guild Begins 80th Season With Marchesa Fashion Show And Announcement Of OPERA BALL

San Francisco Opera Guild launched its 80th season celebrations on Thursday, May 16, with Marchesa, a fashion show featuring the Marchesa Fall 2019 collection, at Neiman Marcus Union Square in San Francisco. A prominent event of the new anniversary season will be Opera Ball, one of the premier philanthropic events on the West Coast. Presented in partnership with San Francisco Opera, Opera Ball 2019: The Capulets' Masked Ball will celebrate the opening of San Francisco Opera's 97th Season on September 6 with a festive evening featuring dinner, a masquerade ball and the opening night performance of Charles Gounod's Romeo and Juliet. The co-chairs for Opera Ball 2019 are Elizabeth Birka-White and Jane Mudge. Honorary chairs for the event are John A. and Cynthia Fry Gunn and Diane B. Wilsey.
Hawa Kassé Mady Diabaté Cancels Appearance at Kronos Festival 2019 Due to Visa Delays

It is with great regret that the Kronos Performing Arts Association (KPAA) announces that Hawa Kasse Mady Diabate is unable to travel to the U.S. to be part of Kronos Festival 2019 in San Francisco on June 1. Her cancellation is due to the U.S. Department of State's failure to issue her required P-3 visa in a timely fashion.
Boxcar Theatre's THE SPEAKEASY To Close August 4

Boxcar Theatre announced today that its hit show, The Speakeasy, will finally close on Sunday, August 4, after a remarkable run of approximately 425 performances before an audience of more than 72,000 attendees. Conceived and created by Boxcar Artistic Director Nick A. Olivero, The Speakeasy recreates an authentic Prohibition-era nightclub, complete with disguised entrances, secret passageways and vaudeville cabaret.

The San Francisco International Arts Festival is relieved to announce that all five members of the Spitfire Company landed at San Francisco International Airport last night and successfully crossed customs and excise into the United States. Spitfire is the last company to arrive for this year's Festival. Their visas finally being approved and processed on Friday May 24. In light of recent visa reversals the Festival organization is glad the Spitfire Company was able to make it.

A.C.T.'s The Strand Hosts PianoFight's ShortLived VIII Finals

For the first time in its 12-year history, the San Francisco-based PianoFight will present The Finals of the nation's largest, audience-judged theater competition, ShortLived VIII, at American Conservatory Theater's Strand Theater. The Finals' performances at The Strand will wrap up a nine week competition, featuring over 200 Bay Area artists creating 48 world premiere plays, staged for over 2,000 audience members who score each production. The group that scores the highest at the end of The Finals will be crowned the ShortLived VIII champion and awarded a $5,000 cash prize.

Word for Word and Z Space will stage an immersive production of Samuel Taylor Coleridge's legendary Rime of the Ancient Mariner  with a press night of Saturday September 21 at 8pm running through October 12 (Previews Sept 11-15, 18-20) .   Rime of the Ancient Mariner is to be directed by Jim Cave and Delia MacDougall. Considered by some to be a 'green parable,' this epic voyage is a tale of man's crime against nature, with the shooting of the magnificent albatross--and the havoc which nature wreaks in return.

Valley Of The Moon Music Festival Announces Full Summer Program

Valley of the Moon Music Festival, the nation's first and only organization devoted to presenting chamber music from the Classical era to the early 20th-century performed on instruments built when the music was written, has announced its full summer program including five new apprentices and three guest lecturers.
