North Bay's Raven Players Seek Submissions For New Short Play Festival

Healdsburg's Raven Players, located in the heart of the Northern California wine country, have announced they are accepting submissions for their inaugural Short Play Festival to run February 28 - March 1, 2020 at the Raven Performing Arts Theater in Healdsburg. The competitive festival is themed 'Love Bites' and will feature plays of 10 to 20 minutes in duration. Playwrights from around the world are invited to submit original works that generally focus on the joy, heartbreak, humor and/or tragedy of any type of love.

There is just something so damned exciting about Tony Kushner and Jeanine Tesori's 'Caroline, or Change'! It is rare indeed to experience a work of art this ambitious, morally complex, entertaining, honest, and just plain downright human. It is easily one of the handful of best musicals written in the past 25 years. And how original - a musical play about nothing less than the human capacity for change and growth despite seemingly insurmountable odds. For anyone out there bemoaning the dumbing-down of the American musical theater and longing for the halcyon days of Broadway's supposed Golden Age, you need look no further than 'Caroline' to restore your confidence.

This stunning collaboration is the result of Oakland-based Kitka's long-standing relationship with Shoghaken Folk Ensemble and its lead member Hasmik Harutyunyan. In October 2010, the Kitka Women's Vocal Ensemble traveled from Oakland to Armenia to deepen their study of Armenian folk singing traditions. The all-female groupa?"which specializes in Eastern European women's vocal traditionsa?"engaged in village expeditions and joint field work with Shoghaken, as well as students and professors from the Komitas State Conservatory, performing a cross-cultural program featuring Armenian lullabies, wedding songs, songs of longing, as well as Balkan, Greek, and Georgian songs.
