Caramoor International Music Festival Presents Jasper String Quartet 8/5

The Caramoor International Music Festival presents its 2009-10 Ernst Stiefel String Quartet-in-Residence, the Jasper String Quartet, on August 5 at 7:30PM in the Spanish Courtyard. The quartet will perform a diverse program including the world premiere of a new work by well-known contemporary composer Annie Gosfield, a late work by Haydn - the String Quartet No. 60 in G major - and Berg's monumental, yet cryptic Lyric Suite.

A sense of discovery animates Annie Gosfield, a stalwart of the downtown Manhattan scene. The work for the Jasper Quartet, entitled The Blue Horse Walks on the Horizon, is inspired by her research on coded messages broadcasted by Free French Forces in Britain to Nazi-occupied France during World War II. Ms. Gosfield said the work involves transcriptions of the broadcasts' "wildly poetic sounds against the backdrop of some odd-sounding music." The piece also displays the influence of the late French pianist Bernard Peiffer, onetime resistance fighter and a former teacher of Ms. Gosfield.

By car from the West Side of Manhattan and New Jersey, take the Saw Mill River Parkway north to Katonah. Exit at Route 35/Cross River. Turn right and, at the first traffic light, make a right turn onto Route 22 south. Travel 1.9 miles to the junction of Girdle Ridge Road. Follow the signs to Caramoor.
