Review: & JULIET Breaks Free From Shakespeare’s Ending in Vancouver
by Alyson Eng - Oct 4, 2026
Before & JULIET even officially began, the Queen Elizabeth Theatre already felt like it was getting ready for a pop concert. A glowing pink sign sat at the centre of the stage while instrumental versions of songs that would soon make their way into the show played in the background. Then again, it’s hard not to feel at home when you already know most of the soundtrack.

In 1590s London, William Shakespeare is just hours from debuting his latest masterpiece: Romeo & Juliet. However, his wife, Anne, is less than pleased with the tragic tale’s ending. Sure enough, the grieving teen casts aside her dagger, packs a bag, and embarks on a journey of self-discovery.
