Richard Nelson has received several prestigious awards throughout his career. He won a Special Citation from the Obie Awards for The Rhinebeck Panorama and another Special Citation from the New York Drama Critics Circle Awards for the Apple Family Plays. He is also a Playwrights' Sidewalk Inductee recognized by The Lortels. Nelson was awarded for Outstanding Play at the Drama Desk Awards for Franny's Way and received the Best Musical award from the New York Drama Critics Circle Awards for James Joyce's The Dead. His work on Goodnight Children Everywhere earned him the BBC Award for the Play of the Year from the Olivier Awards. Additionally, he won the Tony Award for Best Book of a Musical for James Joyce's The Dead, as well as an Outstanding Lighting Design award from the Drama Desk Awards for Sunday in the Park with George.
