Sacramento’s renowned choreographer Jacob Gutierrez-Montoya is taking his talent across the pond with Sacramento Contemporary Dance Theatre’s (SCDT) original take on the life of Marie Antoinette. SCDT will be performing in Scotland at Edinburgh’s Festival Fringe from August 15-19. The Festival Fringe bills itself as “one of the greatest celebrations of arts and culture on the planet,” and we will be here cheering Jacob and Company on as they take the international arts community by storm.

Over fifty years after the first Pride march in 1970, we can be proud of the strides made in the fight for equity and inclusion. Education and outreach play a large part in shedding antiquated and harmful attitudes, which is what Jacob Gutierrez Montoya spearheaded with his latest creation. His Sacramento Contemporary Dance Theatre (SCDT) kicked off Pride month with a joyful celebration of love at the Sofia. Pride at the Sofia featured many LGBTQ artists who shared their experiences, art, and love with the community to spread their messages of hope and change.

Theatre has long been a vessel to carry voices wanting to be heard, and a springboard for important conversations that need to be had. Capital Stage is taking this responsibility seriously, with its California premiere of The Hombres. Tony Meneses’ contemporary play examines the toxic masculinity prevalent in society, specifically in the Latinx culture.

Award-winning choreographer Jacob Gutierrez-Montoya is bringing his special brand of philanthropy to The Sofia this weekend with A Light in the Dark, a modern dance concert inspired by the housing crisis in our region. My first foray to the historical Woodland Opera House occurred this weekend to take a trip back to Washington Heights, the neighborhood that Lin-Manuel Miranda memorialized in In the Heights, his successful precursor to Hamilton.  It was written as an homage to the community that shaped him and the struggles of the immigrants that live there.  After premiering on Broadway in 2008, it took home four Tony Awards out of thirteen nominations, securing Miranda’s career as a lyricist and composer.

Adam Ben-David (Music), Jessica Penzias (Book), and Christyn Budzyna (Lyrics) will receive a 29-hour reading in New York City on May 16, 2022, at the JCC Manhattan.

Michael James Scott (Genie) surprised a lucky guest – the 888th ticketholder scanned at the theatre that afternoon – with a cruise aboard Disney Cruise Line’s newest ship, the Disney Wish. The giveaway was announced during curtain call in front of the sold-out audience.

The hit musical opened at the New Amsterdam Theatre to critical acclaim on March 20, 2014 and quickly established itself as one of the biggest new blockbusters in recent years.

Tony Award nominee and original Broadway cast member Jonathan Freeman played his final performance as Jafar in Disney’s hit musical Aladdin on Sunday, January 23, 2022. Fellow original Broadway cast member Dennis Stowe will assume the role beginning Tuesday, January 25.

This morning, Good Morning America shared the first-ever televised broadcast of the magic carpet flight during 'A Whole New World' in Aladdin, featuring new cast members Michael Maliakel as Aladdin and Shoba Narayan as Jasmine. They were then joined by Michael James Scott as the Genie, who led the cast into Times Square to perform 'Friend Like Me'.

BroadwayWorld has just learned that Aladdin has canceled performances for Friday, October 1st through Sunday, October 10th. Their next planned performance is Tuesday, October 12th at 7pm.
