BWW Review: Rollins College's TARTUFFE is Fun, but Thin Comedic Classic
by Matt Tamanini - November 18, 2015
What if instead of encouraging Jay Gatsby to find the greatness in his true self, Nick Carraway had led his rich friend down a path of phony-spiritualism that brought him to the brink of bankruptcy? That is the premise behind the Jazz Age-inspired production of Moliere's TARTUFFE running at Rollins College's Annie Russell Theatre through November 21st. Directed by John Christopher Jones, a veteran of 15 Broadway shows, including the 1990 revival of Moliere's THE MISER, the production makes great use of a uniformly delightful cast to create a whimsical evening of classic theatrical farce, even if it they never seem to get the most out of the more than 350-year-old text.

BWW Review: Theatre UCF's Entertaining MAN AND SUPERMAN Miss Shavian Mark
by Matt Tamanini - November 18, 2015
For many modern audiences, George Bernard Shaw is the guy who wrote the play that MY FAIR LADY is based on, or the guy whom John F. Kennedy misquoted in 1963, but as director Lani Harris points out in the program for Theatre UCF's production of MAN AND SUPERMAN, running through November 22nd, Shaw was a theatre critic turned playwright, who used his public acclaim to stir the political pot of late 1800s-early 1900s England. A committed socialist, Shaw imbued his plays with social commentaries that range from progressive to offensive by today's standards. Despite the playwright's intentions, Harris' production of this classic comedy of manners is well-performed by an excellent all-student cast, but never seems to settle on anything specific to say, despite admirable efforts.

BWW Review: Jump Start Your Holiday Spirit with FOREVER PLAID: PLAID TIDINGS at The Winter Park Playhouse
by April Montgomery - November 15, 2015
FOREVER PLAID: PLAID TIDINGS is a holiday sequel to the 1990 Off-Broadway show, FOREVER PLAID, written by Stuart Ross. I have not seen the original show, but can now promise that it is totally unnecessary to have seen the original in order to enjoy the heaven out of the sequel. It is an uncanny and unsuspectingly hilarious holiday musical. The underlying plot is quite bizarre, but the script is so well written that no one seemed to care. The sequel continues from the original storyline, where a clean-cut, male quartet has been sent back to earth (following an unfortunate bus accident with a group of Catholic schoolgirls); this time to bring harmony and good cheer to an inharmonious planet.

BWW Discussion: BWW Orlando Editors Discuss Beautiful CINDERELLA at Dr. Phillips Center
by Matt Tamanini - November 12, 2015
On Tuesday night, RODGERS & HAMMERSTEIN'S CINDERELLA opened a week-long run at Orlando's Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts. Running through Sunday, I was fortunate enough to attend the tour stop's opening night, as was fellow BWW Orlando editor Kimberly Moy. As we did when we discussed THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, first show of the 2014-2015 Orlando Broadway Series, we had a back-and-forth conversation about CINDERELLA. While I tend to look at things from a more historical and critical point of view, Kim is an admitted fan girl.

The 2015-2016 Orlando Broadway Series kicked off in royal style last night as the wonderful RODGERS & HAMMERSTEIN'S CINDERELLA set up shop at downtown's Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts. This reimagined take on the classic musical will be in town through Sunday, November 15th, and is a gloriously entertaining spectacle that has as many colorful costumes as it does characters. With a fantastic, first-rate cast, the enjoyable family-friendly musical combines the comfortingly nostalgic Rodgers and Hammerstein score with a brand-new, empowering book. R&H's CINDERELLA is an inspiring, must-see hit for theatre fans of all ages.

BWW Review: MY NAME IS ASHER LEV Elegantly Examines Crossroads of Art, Religion
by Matt Tamanini - November 10, 2015
For millennia, both art and religion have been the focus of some of the theater's best work's, however, rarely has one play combined and commented on both as elegantly as Mad Cow Theatre's stirring production of Aaron Posner's MY NAME IS ASHER LEV, running through December 6th. This riveting work, directed by Mark Edward Smith, follows the artistic and religious journey of Hasidic Jew Asher Lev (played by Michael Frishman) from the confusion of a conflicted child prodigy to the personal torment of an artistic genius.
