BWW Review: Orlando Shakespeare's BAKERSFIELD MIST is Thrilling Examination of the Nature of Art
by Matt Tamanini - October 19, 2015
To whom does art belong? Is it something for only the elite and educated to analyze and appreciate, or is the opinion of the average viewer just as valid? That and many other complicated questions about the nature of art are examined in Stephen Sachs' thrilling two-hander BAKERSFIELD MIST, running at the Orlando Shakespeare Theatre through November 15th. Under the exquisite direction of Matt Pfeiffer, Steve Brady and Anne Hering collaborate for one of the most intelligent, challenging, and exciting performances I have seen in quite a while.
BWW Review: Theatre UCF's Talented HAIR Cast 'Trips' Back to 1968
by Matt Tamanini - October 18, 2015
Since its Off-Broadway debut in 1967, HAIR has become a touchstone for musical theatre fans with a fondness for the decade's counter-culture revolution. Having won both a Tony and a Grammy, there is no doubt that this musical, which defies nearly every theatrical convention, has become as important a part of the genre's cannon as any of the Golden Age's classics. However, it is a show that I have just never 'got.' Perhaps I am too square to appreciate the flower-power sensibility, or too straight-laced to understand the era of psychedelic drugs and free love. Nonetheless, the score by Galt MacDermot (music) and James Rado and Gerome Ragni (lyrics) contains some of the theatre's best 'rock' songs with pop cross-overs 'Aquarius,' 'Good Morning Starshine,' and 'Let the Sunshine In.' Theatre UCF's production of 'The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical,' which runs through October 25th, might not have been able to make me appreciate the show's trippy conceit, but it did confirm that the program has just as much talent as nearly any of Central Florida's professional theatres.
BWW Review: Gen Y's BAT BOY is a Nearly Perfect Halloween Production
by Matt Tamanini - October 16, 2015
There's really no getting around it, BAT BOY: THE MUSICAL is weird, albeit wonderfully so. It's an audacious musical comedy ripped from the headlines of a supermarket tabloid. Inspired by the on-going Weekly World News articles that began with 1992's 'Bat Child Found in Cave!,' the musical tells the story of a half-bat/half-boy creature feared and tormented by close-minded townsfolk, despite the fact that all he wants to do is learn to be human and find a home. Musicals don't get much weirder than that. But, it is for this very reason that Gen Y Productions has become the most exciting theatre company in Orlando in less than a year of operation. Not only are they willing to do shows that are outside the scope of traditional companies, but they also do them extremely well. BAT BOY, a cult favorite since it debuted Off-Broadway in 2001, is far from a perfect show, but Gen Y's version, directed by Kenny Howard and running through Halloween at The Abbey, just might be as perfect of a production as possible.
