Galli Theatre Presents PRINCESS & THE PEA, 2/5-26

By: Jan. 31, 2011

Kids all ages can enjoy Brothers Grimm fairy tale "Princess and the Pea" every Saturday and Sunday this February at Galli's new residence on 347 West 36 Street.  On Valentine's Day weekend all proceeds of ticket sales will benefit "Dr. Fairytale," a program that combines acting and storytelling to help sick children overcome anxiety and self-doubts.

Princess and the Pea is an uplifting remake of the original Brothers Grimm story about a romantic prince who travels the world to find a true princess to marry.  Many fake ones come to impress him but only the royal princess pea test will reveal the truth.  Kids are invited to interact with the actors during this musical show.  Every Saturday the show is followed by a one-hour workshop where children can act their favorite fairy tale characters and dress up in costumes.  The workshop is followed by a mini performance for the adults.  "Galli's Fairytale Theater is a perfect place to bring your children and make them feel comfortable about the stage, the experience of theater, and maybe even the art of being in it," said Carol Cain, Managing Editor of NY Metropolista.
On Valentine's Day weekend the theater's Dr. Fairytale Program will receive 100 percent of the proceeds from ticket sales.  As part of the Dr. Fairytale Program the theater pays regular visits to the Ronald McDonald House, where cancer stricken children can enjoy fairy tale performances.  "When children are diagnosed with a life-threatening illness their needs go far beyond what even the best medical care can provide.  The program brings the transformational power of fairy tales to these kids when they are beset with crisis and need support," said Tatjana Maya MD, the founder of Dr. Fairytale.  "Never have I seen kids stand up and fight for their ideas as during these fairy tale performances," said Fordham Murdy, the Program Manager at Ronald McDonald House NY.

Playwright, clown, and director Johannes Galli has been bringing fairy tales to kids for almost 25 years.  Believing that fairy tales are healing for children, he uses the original story but changes the "grim" version into a humorous play that entertains kids and adults alike and has a fun and educating message in the end.

The Galli Group is a worldwide umbrella organization and was founded by philosopher, actor, and playwright Johannes Galli 25 years ago. The theater group operates eight theaters in Germany and has training facilities in nine countries that are all operated independently. Members of the Galli Group also perform for children in hospitals, orphanages and disaster areas. Galli Theater-Theater for Personal Growth in New York City, Galli's first location in the U.S., is a registered 501(c)3 non-profit organization, whose programs support underprivileged children worldwide.  For more information about its work and shows, please visit www.gallitheaterny.com.
