Hennepin Theatre Trust Has Received a Grant from Disney for Theater Education

Hennepin Theatre Trust has been awarded a grant from Disney to bring the Disney Musicals in Schools program to the Twin Cities. The national program is a free initiative developed by Disney Theatrical Productions to create sustainable theater programs in under-resourced elementary schools. The grant funds programming for two years in select elementary schools. Hennepin Theatre Trust has selected three area public elementary schools to participate in the inaugural year all of which receive federal Title I funding for low-income populations including Peter Hobart Elementary School (St. Louis Park), Susan Lindgren Elementary School (St. Louis Park) and Valley View Elementary School (Columbia Heights). Another four schools will be added to the program next year.

That's what's happening in a short run of an original work about contemporary Hmong-American women at the Park Square Theatre in Saint Paul. It was devised there, based on multiple interviews conducted by Sara Zatz, the Associate Director of the Ping Chong Company from New York City. FACE TO FACE is the latest in a series running since 1992, with over 60 original scripts.

Northrop to Present Cameron Carpenter and the Minnesota Orchestra

One of the world's most dynamic and intriguing organists, Cameron Carpenter, will showcase his talents on Northrop's recently restored pipe organ Fri, Mar 27 and Sat, Mar 28, in a program with the Minnesota Orchestra and associate conductor Akiko Fujimoto. Carpenter has been called a 'virtuoso composer and performer who plays everything from Bach to pop' (NPR) and most recently performed in Minneapolis with Minnesota Orchestra in Apr 2018. The Minnesota Orchestra inaugurated Northrop's restored pipe organ with two concerts in Oct 2018 featuring organist Paul Jacobs.

The Playwrights' Center and Augsburg University have signed a Memorandum Of Understanding, entering a formal partnership to offer online, university-accredited playwriting courses to students from multiple universities and colleges across the United States. The course offerings will be guided by Augsburg University's Theater Department in conjunction with the Playwrights' Center. Registration and accreditation will go through Augsburg's Center for Global Education and Experience (CGEE).

Guthrie Theater Receives MSAB Arts Access Grant & Joyce Foundation Award

The Guthrie Theater (Joseph Haj, artistic director) announced that it is the recipient of two funding awards: a Minnesota State Arts Board Arts Access grant to advance ongoing community collaboration and art-making with the local Native community and an award from The Joyce Foundation, which will allow the Guthrie to commission nationally recognized artists Larissa FastHorse and Ty Defoe of Indigenous Direction to create a new theater production that centers around Twin Cities Native stories, specifically that of the Dakota and Anishinaabe-Ojibwe people. Collectively, these two awards allow the Guthrie and the Twin Cities Native community to continue a journey of intentional partnership and collaboration that began three years ago.
