BREAKDOWN

BEAUTIFUL: THE CAROLE KING MUSICAL

SEEKING:

CAROLE KING: An aspiring singer/songwriter. A unique, appealing, funny and vulnerable girl from a Jewish family in Brooklyn. Talented, good-natured, unassuming, and often the peacemaker in difficult situations. A reluctant star with no pretense and a passion for music. Age: 18 to 30. Vocal range: Eb3 to Eb5. Female-presenting character.

GERRY GOFFIN: Carole’s boyfriend, songwriting partner and eventual husband. Innately sympathetic, wounded and tortured. An ambitious artist always striving for more. Age: 18 to 30. Vocal range: D3 to A4. Male-presenting character.

BARRY MANN: A songwriter who becomes romantically involved with Cynthia. He is good-natured, appealing & neurotic. Ambitious, but likeable. Age: 18 to 30. Vocal range: C3 to A4. Male-presenting character.

CYNTHIA WEIL: A songwriter who becomes romantically involved with Barry. Carole’s best friend. She is sophisticated, smart & chic with a quick wit. Although self-confident and sarcastic, she is also extremely likeable. Age: 18 to 30. Vocal range: G3 to E5. Female-presenting character.

ENSEMBLE / DON KIRSCHNER: An influential music publisher and producer. He is a fast-talking, energetic force of nature. Powerful, direct & sometimes intimidating, but he has a real affinity for his writers and artists. A hit maker. Age: 40 to 60. Vocal range: A2 to C#4. Male-presenting character.

ENSEMBLE / GENIE KLEIN: Carole’s Jewish mother. Once an aspiring playwright, she has been broken down by life & her husband’s infidelity. Protective of Carole and unforgiving of her husband’s mistakes. Age: 40 to 50. Female-presenting character.

ENSEMBLE: Strong singers who move to play Drifters, Shirelles, and other various parts in the show. Also, actors who play instruments.

MEAN GIRLS

SEEKING:

CADY HERON: 18+ to play 17. Character identifies as female. Open to all ethnicities. A new junior at North Shore High School, Cady grew up in Africa and was home-schooled by her wildlife biologist parents. She is warm, bright, and strong enough to take on The Plastics. A great voice and good comic timing who can be the emotional heart of our story. Broadway mix with exceptional range.

JANIS IAN: 18+ to play 17. Character identifies as female. Open to all ethnicities. An “Art Freak” and social outcast, Janis is not afraid to be weird or make others uncomfortable. She paints herself as an objective observer, but, like so many of us, she longs to avenge the devastating events of eighth grade. Proficiency in an instrument like guitar, ukulele or keyboards would be a plus. Broadway alto with a rock belt.

DAMIAN: 18+ to play 17. Character identifies as male. Open to all ethnicities. Damian is outgoing, gay, funny, and theatrically enthusiastic. He is a fiercely loyal friend to Janis and the two share great banter and rapport. Damian loves a good show tune almost as much as he loves an unattended box of fundraising candy bars. Broadway tenor.

REGINA GEORGE: 18+ to play 17. Character identifies as female. Open to all ethnicities. Regina is the Queen Bee of the Plastics. When she shines her light on you, you feel like the most important person in the world. When that light goes cold, you feel invisible/your world collapses. She is regal, still, and “hot,” but at her most vulnerable moments, she is just a kid in over her head. Broadway rock with an exceptional range.

GRETCHEN WIENERS: 18+ to play 17. Character identifies as female. Open to all ethnicities. Desperate to please Regina and to maintain her position in the Plastics, Gretchen is a nervous wreck. She is a “banker” meaning she befriends people to “bank” their secrets so she can trade them later for her own benefit. Her fragility at times is heartbreaking. Traditional Broadway with pop chops.

KAREN SMITH: 18+ to play 17. Character identifies as female. Open to all ethnicities. Karen has relied mainly on her outward appearance so the other parts of her (the intellect and personality) never had to develop. But she is essentially kind, relaxed and a generous laugher. Traditional Broadway with pop chops.

AARON: 18. Character identifies as male. Open to all ethnicities. Traditional heartthrob with a good moral compass and a backbone. He’s not immune to all the female attention he gets, but he’s not going to let himself be a pawn in their chess game either. Broadway and pop tenor.

KEVIN GNAPOOR: 18. Character identifies as male. South Asian (including Indian or Pakistani). Kevin is the extremely driven captain of the North Shore Mathletes. He is confident, academically driven, and suave. Rap skills necessary.

MRS. HERON / MS. NORBURY / MRS. GEORGE: Early 30s–50. Character identifies as female. Open to all ethnicities. All three adult female roles. Mrs. Heron is Cady’s crunchy, intellectual mom who can’t understand why her daughter is devolving before her eyes. Ms. Norbury is Cady’s brittle, world-weary Calculus teacher who pushes Cady to be her smartest self. Mrs. George is Regina’s “cool mom.” She’s desperate to look young and feel like one of the teens. She’s also desperate for Regina not to repeat her mistakes. A great comic and singer to distinctly define these three characters. Eclectic Broadway vocal mix.

MR. DUVALL: Late 30s to 60. Character identifies as male. Open to all ethnicities. Principal of North Shore High. Mr. Duvall may have once taught computers at Joliet penitentiary, but nothing prepared him for the harsh realities of the chaos of high school life. Strong singer with comedic skills.

ENSEMBLE: Ages 20–early 30s to play teens and adult roles. Open to all ethnicities and self-identities. Understudies for principal roles will be cast from our ensemble. Must be strong singers/actors/dancers (high energy contemporary dance) for ensemble.

OFFSTAGE SWINGS: To play 25–55. Swings to cover ensemble roles. See Ensemble breakdown above for details.
