Breakdown
HOME, I'M DARLING
Note From Casting: Actors should prepare a standard British dialect. Strong comic timing with emotional depth is essential. While the world of the play has heightened elements, the characters should be grounded and approached with honesty rather than caricature. We are open to actors of all ethnicities for all available roles.
SEEKING:
Judy (F, 38) – A former professional living as a 1950s housewife in a meticulously curated retro home. She is deeply committed to the authenticity of this lifestyle, using it as a shield against the uncertainties of the modern world. Intelligent, polished, and strategic, with a need for control and reassurance. Charming & witty, but vulnerable with simmering anxiety underneath.
Johnny (M, 37) – Judy’s husband. Affable, loving, and slightly boyish, with gentle, accommodating masculinity. He once enjoyed and supported Judy’s 1950s fantasy but did not create it. As financial pressure and the need for advancement grow, he begins to question the world they’ve built, realizing it has quietly eroded his confidence and sense of self.
Fran (F, 35) – Judy’s close friend/Marcus’ wife. Quick-witted and self-aware, she enjoys the 1950s aesthetic—dressing up, dancing, and playing along—but remains more grounded in the present than Judy. Less polished domestically and more openly conflicted about what she wants.
Marcus (M, 43) – Fran’s husband. Charismatic, confident, and comfortably traditional. Enjoys the 1950s fantasy and the gender roles it reinforces. His charm has a slightly lascivious edge and a hint of entitlement, requiring a balanced likability with an undercurrent of discomfort.
Sylvia (F, 67) – Judy’s mother. Formidable, articulate, and politically engaged. A second-wave feminist who raised Judy to be independent and finds her daughter’s chosen lifestyle baffling and frustrating. Intellectually rigorous, but with genuine love and concern beneath the ideology.
Alex (F, 30) – Johnny’s new boss. Composed, modern, confident, and professionally assured. Foil to Judy. Represents the contemporary world pressing against Judy and Johnny’s carefully crafted domestic fantasy.
