Breakdown
MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG
SEEKING:
- Frank Shepard: 40s to 20s. Very Strong singer. Bari-tenor. A once-idealistic composer who becomes a wealthy Hollywood producer. Frank seems to have it all but he has lost everything that’s important to him and he’s so far gone that he may not know how to fix it. His ambition and compromises slowly damage his friendships and values.
- Charley Kringas: 40s to 20s. Solid singer. Tenor. Frank’s closest friend and lyricist partner. Intelligent, sarcastic, and principled, he struggles with Frank’s shift toward commercial success and away from their artistic ideals. Frank’s choices have made him bitter and broken.
- Mary Flynn: 40s to 20s. Very strong Mezzo, Alto Belt. A witty theater critic and novelist who is deeply loyal to Frank and Charley. Secretly in love with Frank, she becomes increasingly cynical as their friendship falls apart, turning to alcohol.
- Gussie Carnegie: 30s to 20s. Strong Belt. A glamorous actress who later marries Frank. Ambitious and manipulative, she encourages Frank’s move toward fame and wealth.
- Beth Spencer: 40s to 20s. Strong character and legit Soprano. Best auditions for and joins Charley and Frank’s first review. She becomes Frank’s first wife and the mother of his son. A sincere woman who represents the simpler, idealistic life Frank gradually leaves behind.
- Joe Josephson: 60s to 40s. Solid Baritone voice. A powerful Broadway producer who helps launch Frank and Charley’s careers but pushes them toward commercial theater and film.
- Meg Kincaid: 30s to 20. Strong Mezzo. A show-business friend of the trio who becomes a successful movie star and dates Frank for a short while. In many ways she represents the entertainment world Frank eventually joins.
- Frank Shepard Jr.: 10ish. Frank and Beth’s young son, symbolizing the family life Frank loses through his choices.
- Ensemble: All ages. Strong voices. A collection of artists, critics, producers, and general “show folk” who connect to the lives of Charley, Frank, and Mary.
