The Hartt School Celebrates 90 Years Of Performing Arts Education

Creative partnerships, unique residencies, and thought-provoking conversations - as well as a fantastic gala celebration on October 16 - will highlight The Hartt School's 90th anniversary year.

On Sunday September 19, 2010, from 11:30 AM to 12:50 PM, The Hartt School will sponsor a Panel Discussion at the University of Hartford President's College Showcase 2010 entitled The Future of American Orchestras. Panelists will discuss the problems and prospects facing American symphony orchestras, their music, and their audience's expectations. This timely conversation will examine trends and challenges facing youth, community, collegiate, and professional orchestras.

Distinguished panelists include:
· Janet Arms, Senior Artist Teacher (flute), The Hartt School; member, New York City Opera orchestra;
· Edward Cumming, Music Director of The Hartford Symphony Orchestra; Interim Director of Orchestral Activities, The Hartt School;
· David Cyzak, 2011 Master's Candidate (oboe), The Hartt School;
· Henry Fogel, Dean Of The Chicago College Of Performing Arts, Immediate-past President, Chicago Symphony Orchestra Association;
· Dalouge Smith, CEO, San Diego Youth Symphony & Conservatory; and
· Moderator Aaron Flagg, Dean of The Hartt School of the University of Hartford.

In addition, innovative dancer, choreographer, and theatrical director David Gordon will be in residence at The Hartt School this fall. Mr. Gordon will lead the Dance Division's senior class as well as twelve student actors from the Theatre Division in a joint composition class. Gordon will return in the spring with his dance company to prepare a new work on Pirandello's Six Characters in Search of an Author. Celebrated flutist, writer, broadcast journalist, and entrepreneur Eugenia Zukerman also will be in residence at Hartt and other areas of the University of Hartford this year. Ms. Zukerman will be in residence in October, 2010, and February, 2011. She will work with several colleges and departments of the University, teaching master classes in flute for The Hartt School, as well as meeting with broadcast journalism students, creative writing students, and health and science students from other schools of the University. Eugenia's example will inspire students to more fully develop their talents across conventional boundaries.

Ms. Zukerman also will serve as Mistress of Ceremonies for this year's spectacular fundraising gala, Hartt Celebrates 90 Years, which will take place on Saturday evening, October 16, at the Mort and Irma Handel Performing Arts Center in Hartford. Hartt's 90th anniversary gala features an elegant opening reception and seated dinner; magnificent music, dance, and theatre performances by Hartt students, alumni, and faculty; a diverse selection of wonderful silent auction items; an exciting and unique live auction hosted by WDRC radio personality Brad Davis; and an after-glow party with entertainment.
