The Magnificent MAZOWSZE 60th Anniversary Tour comes to PlayhouseSquare

By: Nov. 02, 2010

Direct from Poland, the internationally renowned MAZOWSZE returns to PlayhouseSquare as part of its special North American 20-city, 60th Anniversary Tour. The group will perform in one show only, Monday, December 6th at 7:30 PM at the Palace Theatre at PlayhouseSquare. Tickets are currently on sale.

Truly the National Song and Dance Ensemble of Poland, MAZOWSZE was founded by Professor Tadeusz Sygietynski, an eminent composer and folklore lover, and his wife Mira, an actress who began her career in post-war Poland. They promised themselves that if they survived the war they would create a folk group. Survive they did, and the first performance of MAZOWSZE was staged in Warsaw's Polish Theatre in November 1950, following two years of intense studying, practicing and rehearsing.

In the beginning the group mainly focused on the songs and dances of Central Poland; however, today the choreography and musical arrangements represent 39 regions of Poland with traditional performance styles. A full 23-member orchestra performs music ranging from Chopin to simple folk melodies beloved by the Poles for centuries. More than 90 dancers, musicians and singers are arrayed in a seemingly never-ending series of handmade traditional costumes - more than 1,000 in total, one more dramatic and colorful than the next. Some weigh as much as 30lbs, making their energetic gravity-defying leaps, twirls and lifts even more impressive!

The incomparable MAZOWSZE performance troupe whirls, leaps, stamps and glides in a glorious outpouring of sound and motion, rhythm and music that celebrates the cultural legacy of Poland. In the past 60 years they have given performances all across the globe, with more than 7,000 shows in over 50 countries.
