Broadway In Chicago and the cast of STOMP, the international percussion sensation, are pleased to announce a special appearance at the Alexander Graham Bell School (3730 N. Oakley Avenue) in Chicago to perform in front of the school's hearing impaired elementary students on Wednesday, April 28, 2010. The performance will be approximately 45 minutes, beginning at 1:15 pm, in front of an intimate group of hearing impaired students, along with select hearing peers, ages three to eight years old.

Eight cast members of STOMP, which will play the Bank of America Theatre beginning on Tuesday, April 27, will use their talents to teach participating children sound through the use of show props like brooms and trash bins. Through the vibrations and visuals of producing the sounds, the children at Alexander Graham Bell School will gain a better understanding of being able to produce music and sound.

According to the Journal of Research in Music Education, music and dance can serve as cultural identification tools and an alternative means of communication for the hearing impaired if given the opportunity to explore this area. Hearing problems make it more difficult for these individuals to learn dances or hear a rhythm but with patience and special attention such as turning up the bass or holding a speaker they can learn. Assistant Principal Sandra Caudill said, "The STOMP workshop will enable our deaf students the opportunity fully access music without the prerequisite sense of hearing or listening with their ears. The workshop will also allow them the ability to participate in an inclusive activity with their hearing peers."

According to its mission statement, "Bell School will teach all of its students the foundational academic and social skills they need to achieve their highest ambitions; will help all of its students learn to be respectful, thoughtful, and well-balanced; and will challenge all of its students to excel as engaged citizens of the world. Bell School values the professionalism and dedication of the faculty and staff; the participation of parents; transparency, creativity, and collaboration in decision-making; mindful communication; its unique community of learners; and the support of outside partners."

STOMP, which is directed and created by Luke Cresswell and Steve McNicholas, will be in Chicago for a limited one-week engagement run from April 27 - May 2, 2010 at Chicago's Bank of America Theater (18 W. Monroe). Individual tickets are available at all Broadway In Chicago Box Offices (24 W.
