Northeastern Illinois University Presents A DRESS OF STEEL MESH, 4/21, 4/28-29

By: Mar. 30, 2010

Northeastern Illinois University presents 'A Dress of Steel Mesh' written by Kemba Saran. Performances will be on April 21, 28 & 29, 7pm.

A Dress of Steel Mesh, by Kemba Saran, being performed at Northeastern Illinois University on April 21, 28, & 29, explores the role of women's words and silences in surviving intimate violence. When Kemba was eighteen years old, she met a man who claimed that despite her hesitation, their fates were sealed-she was destined to become his wife. A contemporary and iconoclastic contribution on the themes of the ghazal, A Dress of Steel Mesh charts the course out of abuse and into survival and wonderment.

The performances are being presented as part of Women's Words & Violence, a unique, community-based event in April on the Northeastern Illinois University campus, highlighting the power of female words to effect change and healing in contexts of intimate violence.
