New Study Of The Streaming Industry Evaluates Social Engagement Of Netflix, HBO, and Hulu

When BROOKLYN NINE-NINE was canceled by Fox, a huge outcry erupted on social media by fans. A day later, NBC announced it would pick up the show for another season.

From May 6 to May 12th, 1.7 million mentions of BROOKLYN NINE-NINE occurred in social media, according to international social media analytics firm Talkwalker. This covers the cancellation announcement by FOX and NBC pick-up notification.

Some of that online conversation focused around the fact that the show really built up an audience on Hulu, which is what grew its fanbase.

In fact, 41.5K of those 1.7 online mentions included "Hulu," Talkwalker reported. Compared to an average week, May 13-19th, BROOKLYN NINE-NINE only received 192.2K mentions on social media.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine is part of a wave of shows that live a "second life" on streaming platforms like Netflix and Hulu. The market for streaming services is increasingly competitive and these companies must turn to social media to distinguish themselves from the competition by encouraging consumer engagement with their brand personality and products online.

"Social media is a great place to capture information on what people are revisiting on streaming platforms, over and over, which could inform the choices made by marketers, but also major networks and the streaming platforms themselves when it comes to deciding what programming they will be producing in the future," said Todd Grossman CEO, Americas for Talkwalker.

Talkwalker has conducted a study of the streaming industry and can provide statistics on which service is performing the best according to social media users using engagement data on Netflix, HBO and Hulu. The company can look at mentions, engagement online campaings to get a clear and detailed idea of why and how some brands may be more "top of mind" and preferred than others despite offering comparable products.

Todd Grossman, CEO Americas for Talkwalker, is available to speak through some of the more engaging data on this trending issue.
