Like many woman at that time, Tosca's character struggles to be heard in a merciless, man's world. But, unlike most female heroines from that period, she fights for her right to be heard, refusing to submit to a corrupt political system that only seeks to exploit her and her body. - June 12, 2019 Portland Opera is thrilled to present a new production of Mozart's heartbreaking and comedic work La Finta Giardiniera this July. In this opera from 1775, the heroine Violante goes into hiding as "the disguised gardener" at the Mayor's (Podesta's) country estate after escaping her abusive lover, Count Belfiore. As she chooses forgiveness, a dizzying cast of characters come together in a tale about the very complex nature of the human heart. Portland Opera will present six performances of La Finta Giardiniera on July 12, 14m, 18, 20, 24, and 27 at the Newmark Theatre.

- June 05, 2019 The Metropolitan Opera's annual Summer HD Festival, presenting free outdoor screenings of operas in Lincoln Center Plaza, returns for the 11th time this summer, with one screening each night from Saturday, August 24, to Monday, September 2, 2019 (Labor Day). The series features ten performances from the company's acclaimed Live in HD series of movie theater transmissions, including performances from the 2018 19 season as well as some of the most popular transmissions from past years. Preceding the festival, on Friday, August 23, the classic movie musical Funny Face will be screened in the plaza, in association with Film at Lincoln Center. Funny Face features songs by George and Ira Gershwin, whose opera, Porgy and Bess, will be presented in a new production to open the Met's forthcoming 2019 20 season in September.
