A New Season of Concerts is Coming to BRIC

BRIC, the pioneering Brooklyn arts and media organization, announces the 2020 season of BRIC House Sessions (March 5-April 23, 2020). The exhilarating concert series, held annually, brings the spirit of the BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! Festival into the organization's Fort Greene headquarters through world-class performances on Thursday evenings. BRIC House Sessions draws its talent from a bold and eclectic array of musical genres, featuring both local treasures and internationally-renowned artists.
Brooklyn Tavern Theater Presents Musical, YBOR CITY

'Ybor City,' an original musical with book by Anita Gonzalez and music and lyrics by Dan Furman, is a story of romance and labor organizing in 1918 Tampa, where the Afro-Cuban workforce joined with Italian and Spanish immigrants to unionize the new American cigar industry. The tuner will be presented as a work-in-progress February 5 to 26 by Brooklyn Tavern Theater, which is is pioneering a new theatrical genre: no-frills, immersive musicals presented as Equity showcases in hospitable taprooms. Performances will be Feb. 5, 12, 18, 19 and 26 at Rustik Tavern, 471 Dekalb Ave., Bed-Stuy and February 10 and 25 at The Players, 16 Gramercy Park South, Manhattan. Vernice Miller directs a cast of eleven. Co-producer is Art Boundaries Unlimited, Inc.
Brooklyn Podcast Festival New Show & Lineup Announced

City Farm Presents released show and lineup updates for the 3rd Brooklyn Podcast Festival which takes place January 22 - 26, 2020 in Brooklyn, New York. Featuring more than 15 podcasts over 5 days, the Festival will be hosted at The Bell House, Union Hall, and BRIC House. Tickets are currently on sale for all announced shows.

BAX/Brooklyn Arts Exchange has announced the 2020 YouthWorks Festival. Established in 1991 (formerly Kids Outback) and led by Director Donna Costello and Assistant Director Kelindah Schuster, YouthWorks is a free annual opportunity for young people (ages 8 - 18) to imagine, create, and perform their own original performance work at BAX. Throughout the program's duration, young artists go on a personal and artistic journey that begins with a family orientation meeting and continues through to the performance. Participants come to the program from all over the city, sharing a common goal to create 'something' new and set themselves to work.

African-American Composers Will Be Highlighted in New Concert in Brooklyn

AURAL COMPASS PROJECTS - On Friday, February 7th, 2020 at 7:30pm, Aural Compass Projects presents Lift Every Voice, a celebration of African-American composers of the last century. Featured cycles on the program are John Carter's Cantata, a five-part work of sophisticated arrangements of spirituals; Jacqueline Hairston's On Consciousness Streams, a song cycle with text by Ms. Hairston, a translation of text by Ludwig van Beethoven, and an excerpt from Dr. Howard Thurman's Meditations of the Heart; Margaret Bonds' Three Dream Portraits, which uses poems by Langston Hughes; and H. Leslie Adams' Nightsongs, using the words of five African-American poets. Soprano Meroë Khalia Adeeb, mezzo-soprano Tesia Kwarteng, and tenor Elliott Paige all make their ACP debuts, joined by Artistic Director and pianist Michael Lewis.

From Friday, February 7 through Thursday, February 20, BAM presents an exclusive New York run of a new 4K restoration of Horace Jenkins' romantic drama of race, family, history, and colorism, Cane River (1982). Stars Richard Romain and Tommye Myrick and Jenkins' son, filmmaker/journalist Sacha Jenkins, will appear in person for post-film Q&As Friday, February 7 at 7pm, Saturday, February 8 at 4:30pm and 7pm, and Sunday, February 9 at 2pm.

Gallery Players Announced 23rd Annual Black Box New Play Festival

The Black Box New Play Festival is Gallery Players' signature festival of new works by both new and established playwrights, featuring world premieres of new comedies and dramas. Now in its 23rd year, the festival will premiere 18 new plays over the course of three weekends. The festival opens Thursday, January 9 and runs through January 26, with a new collection of plays presented each week. Performances are Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings at 7:30PM, and Sundays at 3PM. There will be a talk back with the playwrights directly after the Sunday matinees.

BRIC and The Green-Wood Cemetery have announced Death Becomes Her, a group exhibition exploring how death and the grieving process impact the living, on view in BRIC's Main Gallery (647 Fulton St, Brooklyn) from February 20-April 19, 2020. The seven featured artists include Mimi Bai, Nona Faustine, Rachel Grobstein, Gyun Hur, Heidi Lau, Catalina Ouyang, and Keisha Scarville. This exhibition is co-curated by BRIC Curator, Jenny Gerow, and Green-Wood's Director of Public Programs and Special Projects, Harry Weil, and will open with a reception on Wednesday, February 19, 2020, from 7-9pm.

New York-based conceptual artist and musician Ted Riederer makes his BAM artistic debut by exploring the social significance of record shops, vinyl lathe cuts, and recording studios with his site-specific project, Never Records. With a nod to Fluxus, Alan Kaprow's happenings, Alan Lomax, Harry Smith, and the collectivism of 80s and 90s DC punk scene, Never Records embodies Riederer's mission to build and galvanize communities based on the act of listening, and the visualization of sound. The BAM 2020 exhibition marks the 10th anniversary of the project which has recorded artists and citizens from around the globe including Liverpool, Derry, London, Lisbon, New Orleans, Victoria (Texas), Kansas City, and Amman (Jordan).
