Smith Street Stage Will Present Free JULIUS CAESAR in Brooklyn's Carroll Park

Smith Street Stage, returns to Carroll Park this spring with Julius Caesar, Shakespeare's gripping exploration of power, loyalty, and the unpredictable consequences of political violence.

Running May 16 through June 7, with preview performances May 14 and 15, the production continues the company's long-standing annual tradition of presenting free Shakespeare in Brooklyn, bringing audiences together in a public park to experience one of the playwright's most enduring political tragedies.

Frequently revived during moments of national tension, Julius Caesar follows the conspiracy against Rome's most powerful leader and the devastating chain reaction that follows. As the United States approaches the 250th anniversary of its founding later this summer, the play lands with renewed urgency. At its core, Shakespeare's tragedy asks what happens when citizens attempt to change the course of their nation, and what consequences they are willing to face.

Directed by Artistic Director Jonathan Hopkins, Smith Street Stage's production approaches the play as a story about a country facing a hinge moment in its history. A dominant political figure reshapes the landscape of power while those around him struggle to determine the path forward. The story unfolds through a community of leaders and citizens who love their country and believe deeply in its ideals, even as they confront the unintended consequences of their actions. Performed outdoors in Carroll Park and free to the public, Smith Street Stage's productions are designed to be welcoming for both longtime Shakespeare fans and first-time audiences. Families, neighbors, and passersby are invited to gather for an evening of theater that stays true to Shakespeare's language while presenting the work in a clear, immediate style that makes the story accessible to everyone.

Now entering its 16th season, Smith Street Stage has become one of Brooklyn's most beloved free theater traditions. What began in 2010 as a five-actor adaptation of Romeo and Juliet, funded by a Shakespeare trivia night, has grown into a company that performs for thousands each year while remaining rooted in its mission: to make classical theater immediate, accessible, and deeply human.

Smith Street Stage presents Julius Caesar in Carroll Park, Brooklyn, May 16-June 7, Thursdays through Sundays at 7:30 p.m., with a preview performances May 14 and May 15.

A limited number of seats will be provided, and audience members are encouraged to bring blankets or chairs. Admission is free and open to the public, and no reservations are required.
