I know this thread is intended for the awards ceremony on Sunday, but the most offensive and egregious snub of this entire Tony cycle will forever be Katrina not getting nominated.

Came here to say the exact same thing.

Oh, i have. I doubt that Patti will be saying that same thing onstage, when she wins on Sunday night.

Is there such a thing as a "snub" among a group of nominees/winners? I feel like if you get a nomination, you're automatically not being "snubbed." Meaning any true snubs would have already taken place (and consequently, discussed in detail in other threads).

A surprise winner is more of an "upset," I think.

Exactly snubs are for nominations and upsets for the awards.

This thread should be TONY awards upsets.

You’re right and you should say it.

Strange Loop deserved more! Glad it won Best Musical, but it DESERVED SO MUCH MORE!

The idea is to work and to experiment. Some things will be creatively successful, some things will succeed at the box office, and some things will only - which is the biggest only - teach you things that see the future. And they're probably as valuable as any of your successes. -Harold Prince

When it lost Best Score to SIX (of all shows, ugh!), the bar I was at collectively plotzed and we then knew we were in for a weird night.

With how the trajectory was going, by the time the big award came around, I thought they were going to give the ultimate middle finger and award Best Musical to MJ.

I’m not kidding when I call this my Gay Super Bowl - because quite literally I’m yelling at the screen and reacting like I’m at a sporting event lol

Also, I’m INCENSED that Kenita did not will Best Featured Actress. I put all my chips on her because she DESERVED it, and would’ve accepted Rachel Dratch in her place.

Then Phylicia Rashad comes walking in outta nowhere…

Kenita or Rachel should've won. A. I don't really enjoy Phylicia anymore after some... less than smart comments were made. I am someone who tries to separate art from the artist. But, I can't forgive what was said. B. She shouldn't have been in the category.

However, the biggest upset of the night happened on May 9th at 9 AM when the nominations were announced and the stunning Katrina Lenk was omitted.

Nobody wuz robbed. Nobody "deserved" anything. Theater is subjective and people have different reactions to the same piece of theater. More people voted for something else. That's the way it goes.

I thought How I Learned To Drive was a remarkable piece of theater. Incredible performances and uniformly rave reviews. I thought for sure it would win at least something but it was completely shut out. Am I disappointed? Sure. Can I see a case for the actors and show it lost to even if it wouldn't be how I would have voted? Yes, of course. But I'm not going to sit here typing in CAPS about what it deserved or how I expected more from the TONYS  cause that would imply anyone who dared to disagree with what I thought is wrong, and that's just silly among other things. It got what the majority of Tony voters believed it deserved and that's how it goes. It deserved nothing more.

I mean…look, I’ve been very anti-Rashad through all of this - I’ve been vocal about her disgraceful Cosby stance, and I was rooting against her in this category as a result.

But like, she didn't “come out of nowhere" by any means.  Aside from the Cosby issue, she was well-positioned to win. She’s otherwise well-regarded as an industry legend, in an extremely meaty role - plus she won the Drama Desk. And on top of all that…I have to admit it was a really strong performance.

It was pointed out in the main Tonys thread that voters could only vote if they had seen all nominated performances.   Spivey was out sick a lot in the last month  so a lot of voters probably didn't see him even if they saw the show.

I'm purely speculating, but definitely sounds like he got hit by bad hay fever since his troubles seemed to start during tree pollen season.  Last year he was still going to college in Pittsburgh,  so he may have gotten hit by something he wasn't acclimated to.  Also, for some people the antihistamines prescribed can make things worse, causing dry mouth and nasal passages. For a singer that would be especially difficult to deal with.

I woke up still shocked that Sharon D. Clarke, and Caroline as a role, is Tony-less.

Can anyone who has seen both comment/advocate on why Sharon didn't win? (I'm a bit skeptical of course and wonder if Caroline was open now the outcome would be different).

"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022) "Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009) "Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000

I was so sure Sharon was gonna win after seeing Caroline or Change until I saw Paradise Square and was completely floored by Joaquina. I was rooting for both. I think too what hurt Caroline was it closing near the beginning of the year so it wasn't as fresh in the voters' minds as Paradise was

Maybe my general distaste for much of Paradise Square is tainting my overall judgment, but I cannot believe Sharon D. Clarke did not win for Caroline.

Who knows…. Maybe Joaquina won by 1 vote?

Did Music Man win any Tony awards?

I was at the show last night and I gasped and leapt to my feet when Deirdre O'Connell won. We can discuss pleasant surprises here, right? smiley

It wasn’t a surprise or an upset, as everyone knew Patti was going to win (and she’s great), but Jennifer Simard’s performance in Company was a lot more interesting…
