Is anyone hungry? The newest Broadway play might just be the thing to sate your appetite. Chicken & Biscuits begins previews tomorrow night at Circle in the Square and will officially open on October 10th, after a virtual premiere last year in the thick of the pandemic. This marks the Broadway playwrighting debut of Douglas Lyons, having previously appeared as an actor in The Book of Mormon and Beautiful. Zhailon Levingston directs an 8-member cast led by Tony nominee Norm Lewis and Drama Desk winner Michael Urie.

“The Jenkins family is coming together to celebrate the life of their father – hopefully without killing each other! Eldest daughter, Baneatta, wants everything to be perfect for her father’s funeral. ‘Favorite’ daughter, Beverly, would rather honor her daddy dressed to show the entire congregation what she’s been ‘blessed with.’ Teenage granddaughter, La’trice, can’t mind her own business if it was on a leash. Not far behind comes grandson Kenny and his very Jewish boyfriend Logan who is maybe, sort of, okay definitely afraid of Baneatta. But Baneatta’s hopes unravel when a family secret shows up at the funeral…”

Who’s digging in?

Oh look, a bibu!

Report back! I have a few free Saturdays while this is open and I'm debating on if this is worth going to.

This is one that I will wait to see until after reviews unless it's free. This team is lucky they aren't publishing grosses this season; sales, predictably, look abysmal.

Urie was in the last show I saw before the shutdown. It's only appropriate that he's in the first show I see after thevre-opening....and he's getting star billing!

Sounds like the type of show to play the Apollo not Broadway ...why is this on Broadway?

Not being racist at all! It just seems to be the type of plays that are done at the Apollo that's all I'm saying people. Chill!

OOF. Just went to look at tickets and besides the first preview, this show isn't selling AT ALL. I hope they can figure something out...

You REALLY want to double down on that remark?  OK.

Will be in NYC this weekend and want to see this play.  I have 2 open slots, so I'll go to the box office to ask about Rush tickets.

Jordan, yes LOTS of available seats.

I canceled my tkt b/c of potential storm again. Heavy rains predicted with potential flash flooding. Hope not. But I figured the show will still be there for another week at least.

I genuinely have no idea what "types of plays are done at the Apollo" as opposed to the types of plays "done at Circle in the Square" but this looks like it could be a fun time. Hope to see it if it can sustain a run.

They do plays at the Apollo? I thought it was strictly a concert venue.

The 2009 Dreamgirls tour started at the Apollo. Phylicia Rashad was supposed to be directing a production of Charles Randolph-Wright's 'Blue" there pre-shutdown. It seemed like the lead producer was trying to keep it together during COVID, but I'm pretty sure it's dead now.

Since the only commonality between this play and the few done at the Apollo is that it has some black stars, what you said and continue to say is racist. As a side point, people who insist they are not being racist almost always are. As penance, I suggest you spend some time researching both the history of the Apollo's theatrical productions, and also the substance of this particular play that I am pretty confident you know nothing about beyond the blurb in the press release. Even though that may not cure you of racism, it will at least position you to be less ill-informed.

I think the comment I bolded is way off-base, but otherwise, well said Hogan. Hard to understand what the original comment could have possibly meant/implied.
