"The lyrics are super inventive and smart"  You are either a young teen who knows nothing about lyrics or you work for the show.  I believe those are the options here :)

Dearest bk...lettuce just agree to disagree, shall we?  Entitled...opinion.  However comma the onlyest two songs I remember from DC are Banana Boat/Day-O and Senora.  And you et moi know that those two infectious little ditties were composed waaaay prior this stage version of B-juice.   Simplistic lyrics, but they each have a melody, a groove and you can [attempt, in my case] to dance to them.

The theatrical division of WB has a less-than-ideal reputation for how they execute these adaptations. Some things that seem like such perfect ideas for stage musicals (Charlie and BJ) come out and we’re all scratching our heads. They’re currently working on 17 Again and A Star Is Born, neither which I’m hopeful for.

I’m surprised they cut Kerry’s song in act two, as it’s one of the very few things that I thought was solid in DC. I’m ultimately disappointed that they kept Brightman. Those Norbert rumors really got me excited.

WB also has never really known what to do with BEETLEJUICE as a property. They had that weird animated series in the 90s, which I guess was well received if it got three seasons; then there was that horrible them park revue, that Brightman’s characterization seems to be pulled from; and the studio has been pushing for a sequel for decades. Which most of the important people (Winona, Keaton, Burton) are onboard for, but under the right circumstances.

Really sad that they didn’t actually learn much from the out of town tryout. Honestly, they should have gone back into labs/workshops, only keeping things that absolutely worked the first time, and opened a new show in the fall (an appropriate time of year for this to premiere).

I am big. It’s the REVIVALS that got small.

Dearest you: Yes, the young teen/someone connected to the production is entitled to his/her opinion, just as I am entitled to respond to it.  I know you know this.

So if someone has a different opinion, they’re entitled to it but you assume they’re either connected for he show or young?

Don’t you know what happens what you assume? That’s not very nice.

This sounds like a nightmare....so does Alex! I just want to throw my tickets for May away, To have Beetlejuice open the show still boggles my mind. Give him some mystery. Give me Nobert anyday, HELL I'll even take Loretta Swit.

Well... hopefully this will extinguish Eddie Perfect’s musical theatre career for a while. Let’s have some actual promising up and coming musical theatre composers attached to these projects.

I'm not sure where all the hate is coming from, but I had a great time watching this last night.  It was funny and memorable.  The leads are great, love the meta aspects of the show.  Set design is great.  I'm not sure what else to say as people have made their minds up about this already without even seeing it.

Not every show is for every person. That’s all. No reason to wish a closing on it or say “eff that”.

Sometimes, I can't take it with these boards.  Everyone goes to a first preview and gleefully tears the show apart.  And then when someone gives a contrary opinion (that they enjoyed the show), they are accused of being a shill for the show.  I mean, come on!  Just agree to disagree on the thing.  And for people for are obviously obsessed with theater - just like I am - so many people root against shows.

I was there as well and had a total blast. It's a big loud funny musical, and everyone around me was having a great time as well.  People were losing their minds with laughter.  And as for the guy sitting on the end of my row who didn't laugh once, I watched him grimace and fold his arms before the show ever started.  It was so clear he wanted to hate it.  Let's give this show, and every show, a chance.  Sure, it's not for everyone, but that's ok.  Let people have their own opinions (maybe after the company has a few performances under its belt).  Rant over...

The reason we are saying “F” that is because, as noted, Beetlejuice says “Fvck Brigadoon” during the show and we are returning the favor. It is a humorous bit of giving them a taste of their own medicine. A very good reason to say it, if you ask me!

Appreciate your insights, as always, Whizzer. I'd been kicking myself for not seeing this in DC. Wondered where I would fall on the continuum of people who loathed it and those who loved it.

I tend to find something to like in pretty much everything I see. But you've made it easy to decide that this isn't worth my time or money, certainly not in a season with so much more to offer.

It's fascinating to me how much the theatre community acts like a hive mind sometimes. One preview and just a handful of people saying it really was not their taste and people are already discussing throwing away their tickets/a closing notice, despite others enjoying it despite its flaws.

I truly don't mean this as an insult. I know I've had the same reaction on several occasions (most recently Be More Chill), but it's such a curious thing to watch.

Regarding the showbiz411 article above, it’s odd that he does not mention Hadestown as a possible best musical contender

It is so easy to stir people to mob mentality. Whizzer was there (along with one or two others) and therefore has every right to share his thoughts, but so many others jumped straight to torches and pitchforks without having seen the show.

Like King Kong, I really didn't have any interest in seeing Beetlejuice (I never saw either movie) until I read the posts about it on this board. Now I'm a bit interested.

Still on my To Do List. I haven’t been to near as many shows as some of you, not even a percentage. Haven’t seen a show that I hated or even disliked. So, four more months to go before I see this. Maybe they’ll have some of the rough parts that are so divisive ironed out. If not, I’ll still go in with an open mind and wanting to have a good time.

P.S. I’ve never seen Brigaddon. Won’t take that jab at the show personally.

Sad that they changed so much and yet didn't fix the problems.

I mean, I actually liked the show back in DC, but totally get the complains.

The cast is so AMAZING, Alex included, that I hope the show stays around at least as much Charlie did.
