San Diego Musical Theatre Announces New Education Program

San Diego Musical Theatre announced today their new educational outreach program "SDMT Academy" and the hiring of a new Director of Education, Shauna Markey.

In the last few years, SDMT has developed a great foundation in musical theatre education, leading the way for the exciting new - SDMT Academy. This educational program provides access to professional training through our amazing community of working actors, singers, directors and choreographers.

"We are excited that Shauna Markey is now a part of our SDMT family", says founders, Erin and Gary Lewis, "as our new Director of Education leading SDMT's new Academy!" Shauna has a BFA in musical theatre from USIU in San Diego and is proud to say she has been a working professional actress (Stage, Radio & TV/Film) for the past 28 years. She's been on Broadway and has traveled the world doing National and International Tours, working side-by-side with many stars in the business. Working with children and young adults is a great passion of Shauna's and she has taught and lead many performing arts programs in Southern California. Shauna is also the CEO of her own company, The Star You Already Are.

Shauna says, "The Academy at SDMT will not only cater to the next generation interested in musical theater but also pre-professional individuals looking to enter into this exciting profession. It will also provide a unique space for working professionals to continually hone their skills in all musical theater disciplines through master class intensives. The Academy offers something for everyone and this is just the start of more to come!"

Broadway Styles Classes - The intention of our Broadway Styles series is to have each Academy performer be confident and trained in mastering whatever style show they're auditioning for and get cast. Our first four day Broadway workshop is Matilda, the Roald Dahl musical, beginning October 24. This workshop will be led by the phenomenal Brad Bradley. Brad is currently playing Mr. Wormwood at the renowned Tuacahn Theater and has starred in seven Broadway shows!

Musical Theatre Fundamentals - Whether already actively participating in Musical Theatre or just starting out, these workshops will give valuable knowledge, insight, and the self-esteem to purse theatre either as a career or simply just for fun.

Adult Class Series - This class provides a safe, nurturing environment for performers over 20 years young, to come learn, train and grow, while working with industry professionals.

Youth Daytime Classes - Daytime youth classes are designed to provide an open, diverse, supportive, collaborative environment for kids and teens to build a community with those who share a common interest, as they expand and enrich their Musical Theatre performance skills.

Broadway Workshops - Our Broadway Workshops will connect participants to Broadway performers, experts and industry professionals.

Intensives - Intensives are lead by an industry expert who focuses on a specific subject show or skill in a short amount of time. Our first intensive class is audition prep for Crazy For You! This intensive will take place October 14th, led by SDMT's choreographer Jill Gorrie and SDMT's director Neil Dale.

College Prep Classes - This class will provide an overview on preparing for audition-based college degree programs.

SDMT's Artistic Director, Jill Townsend, says "Here at SDMT we are committed to fostering the next generation of Broadway caliber musical theater performers through professional level training and experiences. Our 2018 Pre-Professional production, Bring It On, was such a huge success, so we will continue these productions in 2019 starting with Freaky Friday in the spring!"
