Kumu Kahua Theatre Announces A Show About The 38 Minute Ballistic Missile Scare

At 8:07 AM on January 13, 2018, residents of Hawaii were informed that they were under the threat of an inbound ballistic missile. Shortly after that day Kumu Kahua Theatre broadcasted a call for submissions from playwrights, inspired by that Saturday morning.

The Kumu Kahua Theatre production 38 Mintutes is the result of that call.

Presented by an ensemble of actors, 38 Minutes' first act is a culmination of select scenes and monologues that were submitted. The playwrights are Sandy Hall, William Kahele, Jean Koppen, Shari Lee-Huntoon, Ruby J.A. O'Malley, Sean T.C. O'Malley, Joseph Stanton and Wally Wake.

The second act will be improvised, shaped by the ensemble of actors and audience feedback reflecting their experiences of those 38 minutes. The show is directed and facilitated by the skilled and experienced duo, Monica and Squire Coldwell.

July 12 - 29, 2018
Thursday, Friday & Saturday 8pm: July 12, 13, 14, 19, 20, 21, 26, 27, and 28
Sundays 2pm: July 15, 22 and 29

Following the performance on Friday, July 20 there will be a free talk story. These talk stories are offered on the 2nd Friday of each production run and include an opportunity to gain behind the scenes insight from the director, cast and playwrights (when available).

Ticket prices are Kumu Kahua's standard season $5-$25 now through July 1st. To offset the costs of this non-budgeted production, on July 1st prices increase to $10-$30. Tickets for 47th season subscribers of Kumu Kahua Theatre are $15.

Tickets for performances can be purchased with a credit card by calling 536-4441, or by visiting the box office at 46 Merchant Street (corner of Bethel and Merchant Streets, downtown) between 11am and 3pm Monday through Friday. Tickets can also be purchased at KumuKahua.org.

Monica K.C. Coldwell holds a BA in Theatre from UHM; however, she has continued to work in either a technical capacity or performing as an improviser. With over 24 years of experience in the theatre, she has worked mostly with Kumu Kahua Theatre and Honolulu Theatre for Youth doing work from stage all the way through office support.

Squire Coldwell began his acting studies at LCC but has concentrated on both theatre and dance performance. The latter includes work with both Tau Dance Theatre and Honolulu Dance Theatre. On the acting side, his work includes role in HTY's Tales of Old Japan and in two Lee Cataluna plays, Aloha Friday and Super Secret Squad. He also has done much in technical theatre and design.
