Frank Langella began his stage career in Off-Broadway productions including The Immoralist (1963) and The Old Glory (1965) before making his Broadway debut in Yerma (1966). He followed with A Cry of Players (1968), portraying William Shakespeare opposite Anne Bancroft. His early film roles included The Twelve Chairs (1970) and Diary of a Mad Housewife (1970), earning a Golden Globe nomination for Most Promising Newcomer.
Langella won his first Tony Award for Edward Albee's Seascape (1975) and received another Tony nomination for the title role in Dracula (1977), which he reprised in the 1979 film adaptation. He continued balancing stage and screen work with roles in Sherlock Holmes (1981), Amadeus (1982), Passion (1983), Design for Living (1984), After the Fall (1984), Hurlyburly (1985), The Tempest, Sherlock's Last Case (1987), Masters of the Universe (1987), and And God Created Woman (1988).
In the 1990s, Langella appeared in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1993), Dave (1993), Junior (1994), narrated the American Masters documentary on Tennessee Williams (1994), starred in the Broadway revival of The Father (1996), and appeared in Eddie (1996), Lolita (1997), and The Ninth Gate (1999). He also played Ebenezer Scrooge in A Christmas Carol (2000), appeared in Law & Order: Special Victims Unit (2003), and had a recurring role in Kitchen Confidential (2005).
Langella returned to Broadway in Fortune's Fool (2002), winning his second Tony Award and a Drama Desk Award. He followed with Match (2004), earning another Tony nomination, and A Man for All Seasons (2008). He achieved widespread acclaim starring as Richard Nixon in Frost/Nixon, first in London and on Broadway (2007), winning his third Tony Award, and reprising the role in the 2008 film adaptation. For the film, he received Academy Award, BAFTA Award, Golden Globe Award, and Screen Actors Guild Award nominations for Best Actor. During this period, he also appeared in Good Night, and Good Luck (2005), earning a Screen Actors Guild Award ensemble nomination, Superman Returns (2006), and Starting Out in the Evening (2007), for which he received the Boston Society of Film Critics Award.
Langella's later film work includes The Box (2009), Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps (2010), All Good Things (2010), Unknown (2011), Robot & Frank (2012), Muhammad Ali's Greatest Fight (2013), and Draft Day (2014). On stage, he portrayed King Lear in productions at the Chichester Festival Theatre (2013) and the Brooklyn Academy of Music (2014). He also had a recurring role on The Americans (2015–2017).
In 2016, Langella starred in the Broadway premiere of Florian Zeller's The Father, winning his fourth Tony Award. That same year, he appeared in Captain Fantastic and the HBO film All the Way, receiving a Critics' Choice Television Award nomination for the latter. He starred as Sebastian in the Showtime series Kidding (2018–2020) and portrayed Judge Julius Hoffman in The Trial of the Chicago 7 (2020).

Since The Lost Boys took Broadway by storm this spring, there has been much chatter about the “vampire curse” on Broadway being lifted. In the early 2000s, Broadway received a string of three vampire musicals, which all closed relatively quickly. Dance of the Vampires (2002), Dracula (2004), and Lestat (2006) each received attention in their own right, but they also received attention as a group, since it was remarkable that they came along in such quick succession. But the early 21st century wasn’t the first time vampires thirsted on Broadway. The play adaptation of Dracula was a hit all the way back in 1927 and an even bigger hit in a 1977 revival. And there have been vampires lurking in the theatre district in all sorts of other projects too…
