Now Playing Onstage in Delaware - Week of 2/02/2014 THE ODD COUPLE
Kent County Theatre Guild
1/24-2/8/2014
Because these roles can be played with a younger or older cast, the director has no preconceived notion of the age of the characters. The show will be cast with the best fit for the cast as a whole. Auditions will consist of cold readings from the script. The director would like to ask those auditioning for the male roles to be prepared to read in a Brooklyn accent, as well as those auditioning for the female roles to be prepared to read in a British accent (the Queen's English, not cockney). The inability to perform with these accents will not eliminate someone from being cast in this production. The director may or may not choose to use accents in this production.

Now Playing Onstage in Delaware - Week of 2/02/2014 EVERYBODY'S HERO: THE JACKIE ROBINSON STORY
Schwartz Center for the Arts
2/8-2/8/2014
At the start of the summer of 1947, television was brand new, the sound barrier had never been broken, and baseball was a white man's game. By the time the fall arrived, all of that had changed. President Truman addressed the nation for the first time on TV, Chuck Yeager flew faster than any at-batman ever had, and Jackie Robinson became the first African-American to play major league baseball. It was no accident that Jackie Robinson was chosen as the first ballplayer to break the color barrier in the sport known as America's pastime. There were plenty of good athletes in the Negro Leagues: some maybe even better than Jackie. But when Branch Rickey decided to add a black person to the Brooklyn Dodgers, he knew that individual had to be special. He had to be strong enough to stand up to the teammates who would abuse him, and the pitchers who would throw at him, and the fans who would send him death threats. He had to be able to turn the other cheek, to show that he was bigger than all that. He had to prove that he could be everybody's hero. This new play with music by Mad River Theater Works shows the events that shaped Jackie Robinson's character, his struggle to gain acceptance, and the tremendous obstacles he overcame on his way to changing the face of our nation.

In the process they find renewed self-esteem, the importance of friendship and the ability to have fun.As the guys work through their fears, self-consciousness, feelings of worthlessness and anxieties (over everything from being overweight to child custody, bigotry to being gay), they come to discover that not only are they stronger as a group, but that the strength they find in each other gives them the individual courage to face their demons and overcome them. There is great heart to THE FULL MONTY, and the ultimate themes expressed in the show, about taking charge of one's life and following one's dreams are great lessons for all of us. And truth be told, through creative directing and staging, the final impact of THE FULL MONTY can be achieved without ever losing your jockey shorts!
