VIDEO: New Documentary 'Bound by Flesh' Explores SIDE SHOW Twins Daisy & Violet Hilton
The new documentary BOUND BY FLESH explores the lives and struggles of 1930's stars of vaudeville and film, Daisy and Violet Hilton, famously born conjoined. Their story was the basis of the Broadway musical Side Show. Check out the trailer below!
The Broadway musical Side Show with book and lyrics by Bill Russell and music by Henry Krieger, starred Alice Ripley as Violet and Emily Skinner as Daisy opened on Broadway on October 16, 1997 at the Richard Rodgers Theatre. Robert Longbottom directed.
Despite receiving positive reviews, the show closed on January 4, 1998 after 91 performances and 31 previews. It was nominated for four Tony Awards in 1998. While the show did not win any Awards at the ceremony, it marked the first and only time that two actresses were co-nominated for Best Actress in a Musical as a team.
A revised version of the musical ran at the La Jolla Playhouse in 2013. directed by Bill Condon with Erin Davie as Violet and Emily Padgett as Daisy. The show has a "darker approach" and "incorporates new songs as well as additional biographical details of the Hilton twins' life and historical figures of the era."
The revised version opened at the Kennedy Center on June 14, 2014 and runs through July 13, 2014. Bill Condon directs the cast starring The musical stars Erin Davie as Violet Hilton and Emily Padgett as Daisy Hilton, as well as Matthew Hydzik as Buddy Foster, Robert Joy as Sir, Ryan Silverman as Terry Connor, and David St. Louis as Jake. Additional casting includes Brandon Bieber, Charity Dawson, Lauren Elder, Derek Hanson, Javier Ignacio, Jordanna James, Guy Lockard, Kelvin Moon Loh, Barrett Martin, Con O'Shea Creal, Matthew Patrick Davis, Don Richard, Blair Ross,Hannah Shankman, Jason Walker, and Delaney Westfall.
