Cumberbatch had originally been attached to star alongside Jessica Chastain, Emma Stone and Charlie Hunnam.
Del Toro recently described CRIMSON PEAK to Deadline as: "a very set-oriented, classical but at the same time modern take on the ghost story. It will allow me to play with the conventions of the genre I know and love, and at the same time subvert the old rules."
Del Toro went on to explain that he intends to emulate the classic horror films such as THE HAUNTING and THE INNOCENTS. CRIMSON PEAK is written by Lucinda Coxon.
Cumberbatch's upcoming movie projects include The Fifth Estate, 12 Years a Slave, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, The Hobbit: There and Back Again, Magik, The Imitation Game and Flying Horse. He is well known for his portrayal of Sherlock Holmes in the UK series "Sherlock". Other recent film credits include J.J. Abrams' STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS and the upcoming adaptation of the Tony award-winning play AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY, with Meryl Streep and Julia Roberts.
The actor starred in Steven Spielberg's War Horse film adaptation and in 2011 alternated leads in Danny Boyle's production of FRANKENSTEIN. His other theatre credits include 'Hedda Gabler', for which he received an Olivier Award nomination.
Del Toro has made a name for himself in the film industry due to his work on such movies as HELLBOY, PAN'S LABYRINTH, and MIMIC. His last film, PACIFIC RIM, starring Idris Elba, Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day and Diego Klattenhoff, opened in July 2013.
