Roots magazine calls the visually striking and sonically mesmerizing theatrical cult phenomenon DakhaBrakha, "thrilling." This quartet of multi-instrumentalists from Kiev draw on Ukrainian folk melodies and rhythms with an eye toward modern electronic and jazz innovations. As such, DakhaBrakha's melodically driven music is wildly experimental yet still deeply steeped in ancient tradition. Three young women, clad in wedding dresses and tall Cossack-style hats, sing in soaring, vibrato-less voices while accompanied by accordion, drums, and cello, as well as by the sole male instrumentalist, who also contributes a high vocal lead.
