Tadeusz Slobodzianek Attends Remy Bumppo Performance of His Play OUR CLASS Tonight

Award-winning Polish playwright Tadeusz Slobozianek will be at the Remy Bumppo Theatre Company's presentation of his noted and controversial play, Our Class, tonight, April 17, and will participate in a talkback after the show.

Slobodzianek is being brought to Chicago courtesy of the Hejna Chair of Language and Literature at the University of Illinois at Chicago. The discussion will be moderated by UIC's Dr. Michael Pawel Markowski and Dr. Karen Underhill. It will immediately follow the 7:30pm performance.

Our Class, the first drama to win Poland's prestigious Nike Literary Prize, is a fictional look at the 1941 massacre of Jews in Jedwabne, Poland, and its aftermath, as seen through the eyes of ten classmates. It is based on the 2000 book Neighbors by Princeton historian Jan T. Gross, which revealed that the atrocity was carried out not by Nazis, as originally believed, but by Poles themselves.The book and the play set off intense debate in Poland.

Our Class, in an English version by Ryan Craig, directed by Remy Bumppo Producing Artistic Director Nick Sandys, runs through May 11 at the Greenhouse Theater Center, 2257 N. Lincoln Ave., Chicago.
