The Pirates of Penzance

It's almost a century-and-a-half old, but it's as fresh and appealing as when it first bounded into the public eye on New Year's Eve, 1879.  It's The Pirates of Penzance—perhaps the most irresistible of Gilbert and Sullivan's comic 'Savoy' operas.  Opera Theatre of St. Louis has opened a delicious production of this gem.

Emmy-nominated filmmaker Sam Logan Khaleghi makes his stage directorial debut with THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE at the historic Howell Opera House, the first opera staged there in over a century, opening April 24.

The new season, the 70th in Lyric Opera’s history, will include four mainstage productions at the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, including La bohème and Aida.

It wasn’t until later on in theatre history that revivals began including shows that weren’t initially well received or financially successful in their initial engagements. As musical theatre continued to evolve, and more shows entered the canon, a consensus began to grow about shows being worthy of additional exploration even if they hadn’t been hits the first time around. What about musicals that had been ahead of their time, musicals that had fallen prey to circumstances, early works by writers who became successful later on, and of course, shows that found an audience after closing via their cast recordings?

Due to popular demand, Quintessence Theatre (Quintessence) (7137 Germantown Ave, Philadelphia, PA 19119) extended its holiday production of W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan's comic opera, The Pirates of Penzance.

Quintessence Theatre has released first-look production photos and a new rehearsal video for its upcoming staging of The Pirates of Penzance, opening November 19 at the Sedgwick Theater.

 On November 19, Quintessence Theatre will continue its 16th season with The Pirates of Penzance, the beloved comic opera by W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan.

The Gilded Age recently wrapped up its third season on HBO, to record-setting viewership. Much to the delight of theatre fans, the cast of the show includes a wealth of actors who are beloved for their work in theatre. Cast by Adam Caldwell and Bernie Telsey, The Gilded Age shoots in the New York area, which gave the team the ability to cast many actors who regularly work in theatre.

A new version of the classic, The Pirates of Penzance, is currently commanding the stage at Roundabout’s Todd Haimes Theatre on 42nd Street—formerly the American Airlines and before that, the Selwyn. This revisal of the beloved show is titled: Pirates! The Penzance Musical.
