No Gilbert and Sullivan comic opera boasts as many walk-away tunes as The Pirates of Penzance, the only collaboration of the pair to premiere on Broadway, and not in England. Building on the success of the previous year’s H.M.S. Pinafore, but trading—as their principal “serious” focus—the rigors of naval discipline for the obligations of duty, G&S manage to burlesque their normal share of popular institutions, including the army, the police, and operatic sopranos. Pirate apprentice Frederic, at age 21, has faithfully served out his indentures and, replete with a sense of duty, joins the police force, determined to exterminate his old mates. He falls in love with Mabel, the first girl he sees, but the daughter of Major-General Stanley, who himself is the target of a pirate revenge plot. Plans go awry when it is revealed that, thanks to a leap-day birth, Frederic is really only five and one-quarter years old. The engaging musical score includes some of the catchiest music in the G&S canon: Mabel’s pyrotechnic “Poor, wandering one;” the tongue-twisting patter song “I am the very model of a modern major-general;” “A policeman’s lot;” “Climbing over rocky mountain”—a survivor from Thespis, G&S’s lost first stage work; and “With catlike tread,” which, more than a quarter-century later, was given new words as “Hail, hail, the gang’s all here.” At The Egyptian Theatre.

BWW Review: PERICLES PRINCE OF TYRE at Gamut Theatre Group
by Andrea Stephenson - Nov 4, 2018

Pericles, Prince of Tyre is widely regarded as being the product of a collaboration between Shakespeare and George Wilkins. Scholars theorize that the first two acts, recounting the various travels of Pericles, may have been written by Wilkins, while the final acts were pure Shakespeare. It is estimated that the play was written around 1607. One of the most interesting aspects of Pericles is that it doesn't fit a typical Shakespearean genre. What seems like a tragedy ends with a beautiful and romantic reunion. Not only that, but it is filled with surprising and delightful elements of comedy. This was easily one of my favorite Shakespeare plays to watch, and it can be seen at Gamut Theatre from November 3rd-25th. (more...)

Rachel McKay Steele To Perform Solo Show SHIVA FOR ANNE FRANK At The Pit
by BWW News Desk - Nov 13, 2018

Comedian, storyteller and writer Rachel McKay Steele is excited to announce her solo show, Shiva for Anne Frank, which is a tribute to her own cultural identity as well as an honorarium to Anne Frank delivered through a comedic lens. The show is directed by Lauren Ann Brickman and will premiere at The Peoples Improv Theater this November. Rachel's solo show celebrates Jewish identity, girlhood, community mourning, life, and begs the question of whether or not one Jewish comedian can and should relate herself to Anne Frank. Although Anne Frank is one of the most famous and recognizable young women in the world, her legacy is often infantilized or simplified so she can remain a saintly beacon from one of humanity's darkest chapters. For two nights in November, Rachel invites you to laugh, cry, celebrate and mourn Anne Frank as filtered through her own hilarious experiences of getting a nose job, rehashing her Bat Mitzvah, and sharing her favorite story of a one night stand (with a German). To keep the show socially conscious and aware, Rachel is consistently updating the piece to stay up to date with current news and relevant events. The entire team behind Shiva for Anne Frank is female and three of the four women are Jewish. (more...)
