Park Square Theatre announces the area premiere production of Marie & Rosetta by George Brandt, to be directed by Wendy Knox, who directed the early workshops of the play at the Minneapolis-based Playwrights' Center. Soulful and spirited, this play with music tells the story of Sister Rosetta Tharpe, a 2018 inductee into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame who has become a Facebook sensation with tens of thousands of shares of the vintage video of her playing electric guitar on the street cropping up in feeds for the past several years. Tharpe brought fierce guitar playing and swing to gospel music and went on to influence rock musicians from Elvis to Jimi Hendrix and Ray Charles. (more...)

Monumental Theatre Company Announces Black Girl Magic Concert

Monumental Theatre Company will present 'Black Girl Magic,' a fundraising concert for their upcoming season, on November 27, 2018. The concert will feature local Black artists Jade Jones (Mrs. Lovett in Rep Stage's Sweeney Todd), Awa Sal Secka (Simon Zealotes in Signature Theatre's Jesus Christ Superstar) and Ines Nassara (Dorothy in Ford's Theatre's The Wiz). The women will be performing popular songs and standards, as well as audience favorites from hit musicals. The concert will be music directed by Chris Urquiaga, a singer songwriter whose album "I'm Here" is currently available on all platforms. (more...)

First Stage productions are typically cast with two Young Performer casts; this production will feature two Young Performer casts, with three Young Performers who alternate playing the title role of Matilda. Pacific Symphony Brings The Beloved Musical Favorites From The Enchanting Land Of Oz

"Toto, I've got a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore," Dorothy said upon stepping into the color-filled landscape of Oz bringing the magic of Technicolor pictures to moviegoers in the 1930s. Since then "The Wizard of Oz" has become a beloved classic with numerous adaptations including two re-interpretations of the Broadway stage, "Wicked" and "The Wiz." Pacific Symphony will bring the "Music of Oz" to life with vocalists Kelli Rabke, Law Dunford, Scott Coulter and pianist John Boswell on Nov. 9-10, led by Principal Pops conductor Richard Kaufman. The orchestra will play selected songs from each of the productions, including some of the beloved classics such as "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" and "Defying Gravity."  (more...)

Proof is Auburn's passionate, intelligent story about fathers and daughters, the nature of genius, and the power of love. Joining the Ensemble is director, designer and Associate Producer Elyse Dolan, who directed several works in past Ripped and Blue Ink festivals; designer Jared Gooding, lighting designer of Buddy - The Buddy Holly Story; actor Philip Earl Johnson, who is slated to appear in the upcoming Chicago premiere of Steven Dietz's On Clover Road; director Chuck Smith, director of the recent American Blues production of Pearl Cleage's Flyin' West; and actress and playwright Wandachristine, who won many awards for her solo performance Beauty's Daughter. A holiday tradition at McCallum Theatre, Colors of Christmas returns on Friday, December 7, at 8:00pm with a new line-up of stars for a sparkling evening of holiday music and classics backed up by a 12-piece band and a spectacular choir. Black Broadway Creates A Music & Mental Health Album

Singers from the Black Broadway community have joined together to create a music and mental health album of inspirational cover songs. In just two rehearsals, the Darkness RISING cast recorded an album intended for anyone who lives with anxiety, depression, bipolar, or other mental illnesses. Music has been proven be therapeutic and healing. It can provide emotional support, increase motivation, and offer an outlet for expression of feelings. (more...)

BWW Review: BETSY WOLFE: ALL BETS ARE OFF at The Cabaret

Tucked away in the newly renovated space behind the 924 Gallery downtown is the new gorgeous Cabaret. The space, formerly a warehouse and then a roller skating rink, is now a beautiful gem. Intimate tables sit close to a stage that hosts stars straight from Broadway. The theatre moved into its new location in April and the result is unbelievable.
