Nunsense

When 52 Sisters die, accidentally poisoned by the cook, Sister Julia, Child of God, the remaining nuns of The Little Sisters of Hoboken put on an outrageous variety show to raise money for the funerals. Featuring talents from their pre-convent lives, a circus performer nun, a streetwise nun from Brooklyn, a wannabe ballerina nun and a nun with amnesia sing, tap dance and entertain their way through an incredible show. With an audience quiz and lots of fun surprises, you’ve never seen nuns crack wise like this. A totally outrageous show “with a hysterical anything-goes sense of fun,” says the New York Times. An international phenomenon with over 5,000 productions worldwide, Nunsense is a hilarious must-see for everyone.

There's a quote from Bennet Cerf that says, a?oeThe person who can bring the spirit of laughter into a room is indeed blessed.a?? I am not sure I could find a better way of describing the refreshingly funny, exciting, and entertaining opening show of Playhouse on Park's 11th season, NUNSENSE. The classic musical is a madcap romp with a simple, yet hilarious premise that still finds a way to keep audiences gasping for breath almost 35 years after its premiere off-Broadway. On Thursday night, director Aaron Washington took us to church. Nunsense Jamboree, the third in the series, combined the comedic influences of Laugh-In, silly jokes, a puppet nun, and crafty innuendos, five outstanding voices with an adorable set created by Paul Berge at Carrollwood Cultural Center. MAS Theatre captured the authentic charm of a country-western jamboree a?" like the kind you'd see set up at the fairgrounds. All that was missing was a hand raised, waving in praise and meat on a stick. I also had flashbacks of Sunday sermons with my grandma, with much better music provided by Mary Jo Hahn, Rusty Wirt, Wink Warren, and Valerie Frege.

Last night's opening of CHURCH GIRLS, the musical, at the Warsaw Federal Incline Theater was a hilarious journey through the crazy and satirical world of religion, politics, and slapstick comedy. CHURCH GIRLS, most definitely, is the funniest show that I have seen in the past five years. Is it silly? Yes. Is it over the top? Yes. Is it worth seeing? Yes. CHURCH GIRLS is the newest and funniest addition to the long line of satirical plays going after those people who use religion for their own means. NUNSENSE may be more refined, but CHURCH GIRLS is funnier.

"Felicia and I have a song in our concert, LETTIN' THE GOOD TIMES ROLL, that we wrote. It's called 'That Wasn't Me,' laughs actress E. Faye Butler. It talks about how people will walk up to me and say, 'Felicia, I'm so glad to see you.' And then they do the same thing to Felicia, calling her E. Faye. It makes us laugh!" Butler is speaking of her close friend and co-star at MSMT this summer, actress Felicia P. Fields, with whom she shares the stage in SOPHISTICATED LADIES and in their joint revue, LETTIN' THE GOOD TIMES ROLL. "We have known each other for thirty-one years on and off stage. We both began our journeys growing up on Chicago's South Side. I am godmother to her daughter; our husbands are good friends. We have gone on vacation and spent holidays together. She is like a sister to me. We can laugh, argue, say I'm sorry, and hug it out. We can finish each other's sentences. Working with Felicia is easy, so it is always a treat to do a show together."
