BWW Review: Lively New Production of NEWSIES Carries the Banner in La Mirada
by Michael Quintos - Jun 5, 2018

Admirably directed and choreographed by Richard J. Hinds, La Mirada Theatre's NEWSIES aims to be an amiable hybrid between the popularly-received original show and a new iteration that feels fresh for us Fansies forever obsessed with the earlier Disney-backed production that played Broadway and went on tour for a few years. Filled with high-energy music and dancing and a lively, eager-to-please spirit embedded in its DNA, this brand-new Southern California regional theater production of NEWSIES---which continues performances at the La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts through June 24---is a wonderfully caffeinated jolt of a stage show, highlighted by a remarkably talented and athletically-blessed ensemble that leaps and belts one show stopping number after another. BWW Previews: NEWSIES at Dos Pueblos Theatre Company
by Maggie Yates - Apr 1, 2018

High school theater programs are faced with an interesting set of challenges that professional or community theatre companies don't necessarily experience. The age and commensurate maturity of the student actors limits the type of works that can be meaningfully and effectively produced, and there's the practical consideration of aligning the choice of production with the available student population, whether that be an overabundance or dearth of performers. Beyond that, program directors are also educators, thus beholden to the cultural regulations of the school's environment. Finding a quality play that meets these requirements can be challenging, and often the options are 'experienced' classics that have little situational relateability to a cast born in the new millennia.
