The classic story of Little Shop of Horrors takes place inside the rundown Mushnik's Flower Shop on the fictional Skid Row in New York City. In this production, the show will be completely immersed in the quaint and fragrant Bool's Flower Shop in Ithaca, New York. Bool's Flower Shop has been providing the Ithaca area with their services since 1894. They offer a variety of products and services, from a small vase of flowers to large weddings or events. It has been named "Ithaca's Best Flower Shop" by several local journalists. This year marks the shop's 125th anniversary. (more...)

Hillbarn Theatre Announces 2019–20 Season

Following an exhilarating 2018-19 season, Hillbarn Theatre, the Peninsula's premier theatre company, announced the productions that will comprise its 2019-20 season. Highlights include the hilarious maritime musical, ANYTHING GOES; the satirical farce, IT'S ONLY A PLAY; the Tony Award-winning musical, NEWSIES; the Broadway sci-fi cult musical, Little Shop of Horrors; the sidesplitting play, LAUGHTER ON THE 23RD FLOOR; and the critically-acclaimed musical, LA CAGE AUX FOLLES. Hillbarn Theatre closes its season with the world premiere play THE FOUR GIFTS, based on the memoir of San Mateo local Fr. Joseph Bradley. BWW Interview: Alison Whitehurst of BEAUTIFUL - THE CAROLE KING MUSICAL at Salle Wilfred-Pelletier - Place Des Arts

Alison Whitehurst was born in Sugar Land, Texas. The daughter of a professional pianist, she was exposed to music at a very early age, tagging along and watching her father play gigs from backstage. She would often sit and experiment with him at the piano and played herself for nine years. After her parents divorce, Whitehurst transferred to a new middle school. Her mother recommended she sign up for a theatre class to help her make friends. She was cast in her first musical in eighth grade, FIDDLER ON THE ROOF, and thought to herself, 'wait a second! I'm going to sing AND do this fun new theatre thing at the same time?!' She continued on through high school and never looked back, earning a BFA in Theatre Performance from Texas Christian University. Whitehurst is currently on tour as Cynthia Weil in BEAUTIFUL - THE CAROLE KING MUSICAL. I had the chance to chat with her just prior to the tour's stop in Montreal. (more...)

New Village Arts Will Present LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS

New Village Arts announces a change in programming for its eighteenth season. NVA had previously announced a summer production of the West Coast premiere of BELLA: AN AMERICAN TALL TALE, but due to staffing changes and material challenges, NVA has made the difficult decision to cancel the production. NVA's Executive Artistic Director, Kristianne Kurner, says, "All of us love BELLA, but we want to be sure we produce it when we are confident that we can put our best minds together with enough time for rehearsal to be successful." Donterrio Johnson To Direct BUYER & CELLAR For Pride Films And Plays

Pride Films and Plays will mount Jonathan Tolin's one-man play BUYER & CELLAR in the Broadway Theater of the Pride Arts Center, according to the company's Executive Director David Zak. The production will be directed by Chicago-based Donterrio Johnson, whose many acting credits include his Jeff Award-winning Judas Iscariot in JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR for Theo Ubique and most recently, his role as the Leading Player in Mercury Theater's production of PIPPIN. Love is in the air this Valentine's Day, and Skylight Music Theatre is celebrating by announcing the leads for Kiss Me, Kate, running May 17 June 9, 2019. The cast will be led by R na Roman playing Kate/Lilli Vanessi and Andrew Varela as Petruchio/Fred Graham. Kiss Me, Kate sizzles with onstage romance and backstage passion. It won the very first Tony Award for Best Musical and features such unforgettable songs as So in Love, Another Op'nin', Another Show, Why Can't You Behave? and Too Darn Hot. Blending the irreverent humor of William Shakespeare and Cole Porter, this brilliant battle of the sexes follows a tempestuous couple as they struggle to present a musical version of Taming of the Shrew.
