Sometimes orchestras program pieces to meet popular demand, and at other times, they program works to meet expectations or fulfill a sense of obligation. It's so easy to yield to inertia. This past weekend's Charlotte Symphony concerts balanced both types of choices. The DVOŘÁK'S NEW WORLD SYMPHONY is so popular in the Queen City that an extra row of seats was set up at Belk Theater behind the already-packed Grand Tier.

Tame Impala (Kevin Parker) has officially announced his fourth studio album, The Slow Rush out February 14th on Interscope. Today, Parker also releases an additional album track, “It Might Be Time,” which follows the previously released album track, “Borderline.” Parker also released a single, “Patience,” earlier this year. The Slow Rush was recorded between Los Angeles and Parker's studio in his hometown of Fremantle, Australia. The twelve tracks were recorded, produced and mixed by Parker. For the fifth year, THROUGH HER LENS: The Tribeca CHANEL Women's Filmmaker Program will create new opportunities for women filmmakers. Tribeca and CHANEL, in collaboration with Pulse Films and Tribeca Film Institute (TFI), founded THROUGH HER LENS in 2015 to provide industry support, artistic development, and funding to emerging U.S.-based female writers and directors. Participants will gather in New York City for the program's 5th edition, which will run November 4-6, 2019.

The Cleveland Orchestra has announced a new five-year extension of Franz Welser-Möst's contract as Music Director, continuing a partnership that began in 2002 to 2027. The announcement was made at Severance Hall in Cleveland at the Gala Concert opening the Orchestra's 2019-20 season.

The French Institute Alliance Fran aise (FIAF), New York's premier French cultural and language center, today announced the 2019 Crossing the Line Festival, featuring 11 performances and a gallery exhibition from a geographically, generationally, and artistically diverse group of artists whose work transcends genres and boundaries. All performances are world, US, or New York premieres; they are united by their convention-breaking fearlessness as they confront topics from social injustice to personal demons. Many of the performances pay homage to legendary artists of our time and previous eras, while the theme of migration and its transformational effects on identity informs several others. On Friday, June 21, Cleveland Orchestra Music Director Franz Welser-Most will be awarded a Gold Medal in the Arts by the Kennedy Center International Committee on the Arts at a ceremony held in Vienna's Albertina Museum. The gold medal is being given in recognition of Welser-Most's long-lasting impact on the international arts community.

ABC and dick clark productions announced today that Michael Strahan, ABC's “Good Morning America” co-anchor and host of “The $100,000 Pyramid,” will host “Highwire Live in Times Square with Nik Wallenda,” along with co-host Erin Andrews. The duo will be live from New York's iconic Times Square as Nik Wallenda and his sister, Lijana, seventh-generation members of the Wallenda family circus troupe, return to the highwire for a never-before-attempted walk of approximately 1,300 feet long and 25 stories above street level.
