Ensemble Connect Embarks on Second Year of Two-Year Fellowship Program

Ensemble Connect, comprised of some of the finest young professional classical musicians in the United States, continues its two-year fellowship program this season with concerts at Carnegie Hall and The Juilliard School, as well as residencies and performances at The Pocantico Center of the Rockefeller Brothers Fund; Skidmore College; and in schools and community venues throughout New York City. Highlights of the Ensemble's 2017-2018 season include the premiere performances of bright and fair, a new work by Gabriel Kahane, commissioned by Carnegie Hall for its 125 Commissions Project, featuring Mr. Kahane as guest vocalist in Weill Recital Hall on February 19. This fall, Ensemble Connect travels to The Pocantico Center in Tarrytown, New York to collaborate with composer Andy Akiho on a new work, also commissioned by Carnegie Hall, to premiere in 2018. Creator and librettist Cerise Jacobs whose Ouroboros Trilogy, produced last September, was the most ambitious opera undertaking Boston has ever seen (Berkshire Fine Arts) premieres her new opera REV. 23, composed by Julian Wachner, on September 29 at Boston's John Hancock Theater, as the centerpiece of the first Boston New Music Festival, hosted by Juventas New Music. REV. 23 is Wachner's second full-length opera; the first, the colorful and assured (Boston Globe) Evangeline Revisited, was showcased at New York City Opera's VOX Festival in 2010. Directed by West Edge Opera General Director Mark Streshinsky and conducted by Lidiya Yankovskaya, recently named as the new Music Director of Chicago Opera Theater, REV. 23 marks a first outing for the newly reconfigured production company White Snake Projects, headed by Boston producer Georgia Lyman with Jacobs as Executive Producer. Trisha Brown Dance Company (TBDC) launches its 2017-2018 season with a busy calendar, showcasing masterpieces and other beloved works by one of the most influential choreographers from the postmodern era. Highlights include a week-long run at The Joyce Theater (December 12-17); live performances at New York City Center as part of the 2017 Fall for Dance Festival (October 2 & 3) and at Lincoln Center as part of Paul Taylor American Modern Dance's 2018 season (March 14, 16, 18 & 20); and touring in the U.S. and France. EMV presents Monteverdi's ORFEO History's First Operatic Masterpiece

Early Music Vancouver (EMV) presents the first unqualified masterpiece in operatic history, Monteverdi's Orfeo, on October 29, 2017 at 3pm at the Chan Centre for Performing Arts. Often described as a game changer in the history of music, the work marks the end of the Renaissance and the beginning of the Baroque. This classic myth of love and loss will come to life under GRAMMY award-winner and Monteverdi specialist, Stephen Stubbs, leading the singers and musicians of Seattle's Pacific MusicWorks. This production will star Vancouver's own internationally celebrated tenor Colin Balzer in the title role, and will also include San Francisco's Dark Horse Consort, North America's most respected 17th century wind ensemble. Three men - a great American playwright, his trusted and loyal assistant, and a young Canadian street hustler - find themselves together for two days in a hotel room in Vancouver. The ensuing battle for power, love and loyalty is frequently funny, engagingly dark and ultimately moving. HIS GREATNESS, inspired by a 'potentially true story' during the declining days of Tennessee Williams, is an intimate insight into the mind of a familiar public figure, grappling with the loss of former glory and desperate for a return to form and success. Pride Films and Plays will stage the play from October 14 November 12, 2017 in The Buena, the 50-seat venue of the Pride Arts Center. The Buena is located at 4147 N. Broadway, Chicago.
