Phoebe Marlow was graced with a sparkling wit and independent spirit, but languishes under the thumb of her domineering stepmother. When this mismatched couple is thrust together by their meddling families, both rebel and their tidy little worlds spin into chaos. Midnight flights, desperate sea voyages, and scathing society hijinks ensue as these unlikely lovers labor to avoid their fate. The production runs approximately two hours with one intermission. The novel will be on sale in the lobby. (more...)

EDINBURGH 2017 - BWW Review: THE TIME MACHINE, Voodoo Rooms
by Amy Hanson - Aug 8, 2017

Long before the Delorean or the TARDIS ever graced our screens, the story of The Time Machine fascinated the public with the idea of travelling in the fourth dimension. Set at Radio Woking in the 1950s, this production features Carrie (Lindsay Sharman), a station producer in the finest cut-glass BBC English mould, and George (Laurence Owen), the writer and performer of a radio musical version of the sci-fi classic. New Musical STORY OF THE CENTURY Gets Staged Reading
by BWW News Desk - Aug 11, 2017

Hear the rest of the story! Story of the Century, the musical that won Best of Venue at the Unicorn Levin Stage and played to three sold out houses at the 2016 KC Fringe Festival, returns as a complete two-act script and score. Be among the first to hear this full-length script-in-hand workshop staged reading of the original musical about the invention of the Ezekiel Airship, an airplane designed and built by Burrell Cannon that flew one year before the Wright Brothers' historic flight. Set in Pittsburg, Texas in 1902 and combining historic events with fictional characters, the musical captures the spirit of the era with rollicking melodies, social consciousness, and heart. Was Cannon a revolutionary inventor, a visionary prophet, or a misguided dreamer? This is the question that newspaper reporter Elmer Baker hopes to answer in writing the 'Story of the Century'. Two staged readings of the musical will take place August 19 and 20 at Avila University's Goppert Theatre. (more...)

BWW Review: CAROUSEL at Union Avenue Opera
by Steve Callahan - Aug 10, 2017

The Union Avenue Opera is so good at fulfilling our expectations - our expectations of really fine traditional opera. But once in a while they enjoy surprising us, jerking us out of that normal path. For instance, with 'Trouble in Tahiti' several years ago the orchestra was a jazz trio. Now this splendid little company surprises us again with a lovely production of Rodgers and Hammerstein's 1945 Broadway classic, Carousel. It's the familiar story of a young mill-worker who makes the tragic mistake of falling in love with a rough but beautiful carnival barker. (more...)
