The story of Cinderella is a classic known and beloved across the world for its rags-to-riches plot. Over the years, Charles Perrault’s 17th-century tale has taken many forms – films, various literary iterations, stage plays – but none more exquisite than Sergei Prokofiev’s Cinderella, Op. 87 ballet. Edwaard Liang’s rendition of the fairy tale at the Washington Ballet is nothing short of a revelation, packed with entrancing choreography throughout all three acts. Here, a classic tale is reinvented to somehow exude even more elegance.

Today’s subject Lauren M. Gunderson is a prime example of an artist living her theatre life to the absolute fullest. She has had the honor of being the most produced playwright in this country three times and shows so signs of letting up with her always superb creative output. One of her latest projects is the world premiere of I And You The Musical which is in performance at Olney Theatre Center through May 24th. The show is based on her play of the same name, which was part of a Rolling world premiere that played at Olney Theatre Center in 2015.

A retelling of the Book of Exodus, based on the 1998 DreamWorks Animation film of the same name. Bright Star is a Bluegrass/Folk musical written and composed by Steve Martin and Edie Brickell. Its tale is set in the vast landscape of North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains between the years 1945-46, and features flashbacks to the year 1923. The pair produced a Grammy-winning album in 2013 entitled Love Has Come For You, in which the musical is inspired by its lyric-scape and the true story of the Iron Mountain Baby.
